I am trying to figure out how to remove this cable from the transmission on my 02 base Cooper. I removed the other cable which looked "conventional" and did not have this metal contraption surrounding it.

Do I just pry it off, the same as the other shifter cable, or am I supposed to remove the metal casing first? If so, how?

I figured it out, it just had to be pried off, the same as the other cable. I actually used a pickle fork, as it was hard to do it with screwdrivers, and I had already removed the clutch slave cylinder and bracket, so I had plenty of room for the pickle fork, from the front.

 

That rectangle shaped end, what is it called? Mine keeps popping off and the gears go floppy. Do you have to change the whole lot or can I change just that solver rectangle piece in your picture?
