Hawaii Evolution Driving school Sponsored by SCCA Hawaii region

Ok, so you own a MINI but do you know how to drive it at it's limit?

Well, find out how good you really are and for $250 each day you can drive it with a personal instructor.

Even if you don't have any desire to do competition driving you will learn car control and find the limits of your car or your skills.

Sportscar Club of America Hawaii region, for the second year is sponsoring the EVO driving school for three days on the weekend of Jan. 19-21, 2013

Each day is full of excitement. Instructors are top notch national class SCCA drivers with years of experience instructing.

No prior track experience necessary, build on the skills you have already.

Description of classes- Phase 1 and 2, Challenge (you take them in order)
http://www.evoschool.com/index.php?page=classes

Evolution Performance Driving School and the Hawaii Region of the SCCA will be holding Phase 1 and 2 classes and a Challenge School at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, HI. These programs are great for drivers who are ready to take their driving to the next level. This driving school features three different courses, with Evolution's team of National Level instructors. Do you think you look ahead? Well we'll find out in phase 1 and 2, and in session three it's game on, as this school pits student against instructor in a head to head battle. So, do you think you are up for the Challenge?

For Directions to the site, please go to: http://alohastadium.hawaii.gov/directions

The following is a schedule for the days event:

8:30am Drivers Meeting

8:50am Instructed Sessions Begin

12:15pm Lunch

1:00pm Instructed Session Continue

4:30pm Wrap-up Meeting
Those that are looking to get the most seat time possible may want to consider our Saturday Phase One and Sunday Phase Two as well!
For more information on this, as well as other Evolution schools, please feel free to contact Mike "Junior" Johnson at: junior@evoschool.com

You can use any car that is not a rollover risk. Snell rated helmets needed M2005 or later but there are some rentals if you don't have one.
Street tires are fine but some cars will be on race tires.

To sign up-
http://www.evoschool.com/index.php?p...edule&start=10

These classes are first come first served so don't delay. If a class does fill up please still sign up to be on the alternate list.

There are no spectators at this event unless you are with a participant

Sounds interesting.

Can you sign up for a single first day and see at the end of day 1 if you want to attend Day 2?

Also, how much seat time do you usually get and is it mainly autoX?

Thanks

You're in Hawaii? I highly recommend it.

You will need to decide how much to sign up for right now as each class will fill up in a hurry. Last year two full days were filled in a few hours.

This year we have three days and many of the attendees from last year will allow new drivers to sign up for the first two days.

Although the course is set up for autocross there are basic skills taught each day that are important for car control and for performance driving.

Here is a video on Phase 1 & 2-

It doesn't matter if you have a stock or modified car, if you have race or street tires, or if you have any experience or not. You'll get the chance to learn in any event.

You get 24 runs in each full day. At autocross we get 4 official runs of about 40 seconds each. Imagine that for 4 hours you get 6 runs with instruction per hour. Each time you go out you have a set plan of things to do and each time you return you get feedback on how you did.

30 drivers are split up into about 6 groups of 5. While one group is driving two groups are working the course (watching for downed cones) and one group is in the grid getting ready to go out next. Once the group driving finishes all six runs then the next group goes out. The group just finished parks their cars and gets out to replace the course workers that are getting their cars ready in the grid.

Driver's meeting to start the day, then work the course, you grid your car, you drive 6 runs with instruction, you work the course, you grid, you drive. Break for lunch with a driver's feedback meeting. Repeat everything in the afternoon until 5pm.

Once the morning driver's meeting begins there is very little down time.

It is not too difficult to drive on day 1 followed by day 2 but I would not recommend going out late on Friday night before the event or staying out late between events. You will need your rest before and between days if you want to be fresh for the driving school.

I don't think there were any students that were not impressed by the scope and intensity of the EVO driving school. SCCA did not have to think hard about having a three day event for 2013. And the price this year of $250 each day is less than last year's price of $285 a day.

The instructors we will have are some of the same ones as on the video, all very high quality yet different in experience enough to offer different approaches and varied advice.

Last year one of the drivers was brand new to SCCA with no experience and he did very well in his Honda S2000 and is now a regular at autocrossing events this season.

If you have any questions please let me know.

Slinger688 - Well, that didn't last long...you're going to need a good set of wheels and tires for this one to match those brakes and coilovers you have. And, no, you can't have your old one's back. I am enjoying them too much right now.

Now, if you could just talk someone into donating a few acres of land and some black top for a nice 1.5 - 2 mi track.

Glad to see you are still keeping your skills honed.

For the Evo driving school there is no particular need for special wheels or tires.

The benefit of the school is to learn basic driving skills. The car you bring makes less difference than you might expect.

No one cares if you are 1 or 5 seconds faster than another car, your instructor cares if you follow directions and get your skillset mastered.

We don't have an award for fastest time of the day. Just a goal that you are better at the end of the day than at the start.

If you bring your daily driver and learn the limits of that car it could benefit you on the road.

There was a plan on the Big Island to make a motorsports park for $6 million but I think it's now all on hold due to housing developments nearby and restriction on noise.

There is no cheap land in Hawaii. Even black top is expensive.

Those are good for reflexes but won't be enough to simulate the real thing.

You need real seat time. Come out to one of the Aloha Stadium Autocross events we have monthly before January so you can get a taste of it.

If you come by with shoes we can find you a helmet and do a ride along about 3pm in the afternoon, that's for free.

I will try to make it to one of your autox events but it will not be until December at the earliest.

I have some equipment such as nomex gloves, nomex racing shoes and a sa05 helmet from previous hobbies that I may use. Thanks for the offer.

We are getting off topic for this thread on the EVO school.

If you know the exact dates you will be in Hawaii you can PM me one week before you come then I can let you know what is scheduled for any car meets or driving events.

Cars and Coffee is not meeting in December.
Usually they meet up is at the 2nd floor parking at the corner of Piikoi and Ala Moana Blvd

Also note-
For that day all you need are-
Closed shoes that are comfortable
Snell rated helmet M2000, SA2000 or later
Comfortable clothes

No need for nomex gloves or racing shoes unless you want to use them for driving. It will be warm. Some drivers will use them for autocrossing.

Do what the nice man says folks, and sign up.

A few hundred dollars of Evo time is hands down the best mod that can be done to the car/driver combination!

Too much fun also...

Cheers,

Charlie
