SUPER loud fan coming on when hot out - is this normal?

So I've had to run the a/c the last couple days as I just go the car tinted, and he asked me to keep the windows closed for the first couple of days. On my way home from the tint shop, I was at a light, and suddenly, heard what sounded like a super loud fan, and the whole car started to vibrate. Kind of sounded like what you'd expect a hovercraft to sound like. Went off about 30 seconds later. Did it a couple more times on the way home.

Yesterday morning, it was cooler out, may have had the a/c on again, since I still couldn't open the windows, but never happened. On the way home, it was about 91, a/c on, and it happened again, probably 10 times or so.

Am now ok to open the windows, so had the windows down on the way in, no issues.

Is this normal? Just some type of fan keeping things cool? Or something that needs to be checked out?

My car does this as well. It was a bit unnerving at first to be honest, but I am used to it now. I sure hope it is normal haha

Mine did that when the thermostat failed. The car thought it was overheating, and turned to fans on high speed. I never observed it happening at any other time. I hope that isn't your problem.

Thats the high speed fan kicking in since the ac was on. This is normal as it is cycling on and off. It did not come on with the windows down and ac off , because it was not calling for it.

It does sound normal, except it should not sound like a hovercraft nor should your entire car start to vibrate. Assuming the sound is really that extraordinary, it might be that there's something wrong with the fan motor or the way it was installed. Maybe you should swing by your dealer the next time the weather is hot and demonstrate it for them.

I have a base Cooper, and mine has only come on after driving up a mountain, in the desert, with the a/c on full blast. It came on when I turned the car off, and ran for several minutes. Scared me, but everyone said it was normal. However, I should have turned the car back on so that it would cool faster, that's what someone said. Never came on again.

It was loud enough so that I heard it across the street from where the car was. Not like a hovercraft but it was definitely louder than the regular fan.

My first CM did this when it's thermostat failed as well. The difference was it would come on even in 40* outside temps when the A/C wasn't on and it would stay on for 5-10 mins after the car was shut off. Staying on for a little bit after the car shuts off is normal. Mine usually goes off before the garage door is all the way down.

Mine makes the same sound. It's hot and Humid around here so I use the A/C alot and it gets pretty loud when all the fans are running.

As for the fan/waterpump running after the car cuts off that is the automatic turbo cooler or electric waterpump. Back in the day they had turbo timer that would keepo the car runnning to cool the turbo after driving. Now these new turbo car they have a built in Electric water pump that will run after the car cuts off if the turbo is above a certain temp. So no need to waste gas and keep the car running anymore.

Thanks everyone. I probably exagerated a bit about it sounding like a hovercraft, but when you've never had a fan come on like that in any vehicle before, it's a bit dramatic. Like I said, when I'm moving, you really don't notice it that much. But that first time when I was at a stop, I could definitely feel some vibration through the floor.

And it only seems to do it when the a/c is on.
