Geico MBI Mechanical Breakdown Insurance

Recently, I purchased a new MINI CM this is my 2nd MINI so I'm not a totally newbie to what it costs to own one of these cars. Admittedly, when the warranties ended on my 1st MINI I was a bit of a slacker and with this 2nd car I plan to be more on top of maintenance and repairs.

When adding my new car to insurance I was offered Geico's Mechanical Breakdown Insurance. So my question to you all does anyone have it and has anyone used it?

It would add about $100 a year to my premium. I can add it anytime before 15,000 miles and lasts till 100,000 miles. The deductible is $250 and it doesn't cover wear and tear items.

Seems to me that a lot of things would fall under wear and tear also my other concern is that if I'm gonna buy it it's gotta be done so "soon" especially when I consider how long before the manufacturer warranty expires.

As I write this I feel like I'm slowly talking/typing myself out of buying it. It's just in the back of my mind I think it would be nice to have. I'll be moving out on my own in a few months and I'm a wee bit nervous about the unexpected expenses that are bound to crop up. I plan to keep my car for a long time. I had my last MINI for 7 years and unless life dictates different I plan to keep this MINI just as long.

How much does it cost to extend the manufacturer warranties? Maybe I should start saving to do that in a few years instead?

I have it. But Comet is under warranty and I have had no issues so never needed it.

I think it is a good deal for after the warranty runs out. Its like $30 for 6 months. No rush to sign up as you can wait and sign up when you get close to the period allowed (I think 12 mo and 15K miles).
