It was really just luck that I happened to find towels that matched my Surf Blue interior. You can obviously still feel the heat when you've got 90+ degrees outside, but it's better than burning your... well, you know.
Here you could pick just about any color you wanted. Another nice thing, is that if you spill, you throw it in the washing machine. Easily removable and washable.

These are the supplies I used:



I folded the towels in half, length-wise, attached buttons and buttoned the end:

Here is where I placed elastic in the fold, but you could use rope, velcro, anything that would go around the headrest legs (for lack of a better word). I used a product called "Hang Tight" which I found at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. I attached two of them and hooked them around the headrest (pictured below).


And here's the finished product:

I hope this was useful to some. You could use anything, to keep the towel folded over, buttons, sewing needle and thread, velcro... I used buttons because they are easily detached.

Thanks Ryan! I saw the towel seat covers you can buy online, and I really just thought I could do better for much less.
I could go out and buy black, gray, or brown towels, and change them out if I wanted to.

 

Great idea and write up to share with us... I have been using two large black towels for the seats for quite sometimes now especially when going to the beach.

I have two more one for the dash to cover the steering wheels because it gets too hot baking in the sun. The fourth black towel is to cover the back of the rear seat when folded down for cargo and keeping the sand off the cloth carpet.

 

Awesome idea. I get sweaty after working out and this will keep my seats from getting funky! Are the bottoms attached or just laying on the seat? Great job!

 

The bottoms are not attached. I thought it might be more of a problem, but it's really not. They stay put the majority of the time with a little straightening here and there. I'm pretty happy with it and will be making a couple more for the back seats this weekend.

Looks good, and pretty clever / inexpensive idea!
I am thinking about doing something similar for the back seats. Not because of the heat but because of dog hair. I have seen pet covers in the past, but for good ones they are expensive. They really don't make HUGE towels, but that's whats sewing machines are for. The list of "things to do" is growing and the car isn't even here yet!

 

Thanks so much for posting, MiniMouse! I definitely want to make these. I keep a towel on one of the back seats for my dog to sit on, but this is a much more elegant solution. So much better, too, than the ones I've seen for sale online.

Couldn't help but notice in one of your photos the stuffed Hamburger Helper mitt on your back seat!

 

I could be wrong, but I think that may be a Minnie Mouse hand.

 

Thanks so much for all the replies and comments! I made them specifically for the heat. I don't think my husband's leather seats in his Beemer get as hot as my leatherette.
Plus when I found the surf blue towels, I had to! lol

Great idea! So far my windshield cover has been toning it down a bit - but your covers look even better.

 

Wow, the color is perfect! Great job. So far I am pretty satisfied with my basic "air-flow" seat cushion, and use it on hot days.
But the towels would be nice for when we take a hot weather walk in one of the parks nearby--gets to be a sweaty proposition.

 

With my eyeshade windshield cover and the seat covers, it has toned down a bit, but I still need to get window tint too.
