Almost killed my car (and myself)

Here is a little adventure I had with my car on a rainy day..

I know it wasn't the best idea to turn off the traction control under those conditions, but more than half of the track was completely dry and by time I got around to this part I was concentrated on catching the car in front of me and I didn't think it would be this bad. Also I didn't think I would be experiencing oversteer, if anything I thought it would be understeer.

Yep... glad you and the MINI didn't bite the dust.

Do you guys and gals have endorsements on your auto policies that cover you while tracking your cars?

Greetings from a fellow track rat!

The #1 goal for anyone doing a track day (HPDE) should be to bring the car home in the same condition you brought it to the track. It's about being safe and of course having fun. When you start letting your ego get to you this stuff happens. I would not want to make a phone call home to the wife telling her I just wrapped my car into a ball.

Rain is a great educator on car control in slippery conditions, but I always dial it down when it starts to get wet. You were very lucky you didn't slam into the wall Glad you're OK and of course have fun out there

Phew!! Saw that wall coming on the left and felt my stomach drop, even though I wasn't in the car . Great save, I've had days like that with my mini where I literally got out and just started kissing the hood .

Great driving!! I spun off the track once in wet conditions too, concentrating on catching the car in front. Luckily I didn't have a wall so close!

Nice to see you saved the car and yourself!! To reflect on the experience, you always hope that you'll have the cat-like reflexes when the flash moment shows its self and fwd vs rwd are very different. Good Job!!!

Thanks everyone. I don´t really remember much of it, what I most remember is seeing the GTI coming at me almost head on. Except you cant really see it because of the camera placement. But I´m almost certain that if it had been any other car it would have been a very different story.

Yep, and it was the first time I used it.

It´s one of the trickiest and most dangerous corners in Mexican racing history. I found a video of Ayrton Senna getting it wrong. Except that now there is no sand trap or tires.

I recall meeting a tire wall once "at speed". Cold day, lightweight car (Miata), very light showers moving through from time to time. I hit a patch of wet track just before the turn-in for a fairly tight corner, and I was off on the (wet) grass and headed for the tire wall before I could do anything.

The damage was surprisingly light for the speed I was travelling when I hit...
