R50/53 how fast can i go in reverse?
Most likely limited by rev's... Of course driving backwards fast is extremely
dangerous, the steering control isn't designed for it, nor are drivers...
Or are you just perfecting the J-turns for the Italian Job Pt. II

I would guess that in reverse a MINI could go about 35+ mph or so based on gearing and redline
Don't loose control trying this at home.

top speed in reverse is mechanically limited to your engine redline (pending no other "limiters" of course
)
stock redline of 6950 RPM = 45.1 MPH in reverse
aftermarket redline of 7200 RPM = 46.7 MPH Woo Hoo!
Edit - oops, these are the number for the Cooper S, my bad
Obviously - no need to try this out unless you're trying to crash, in which case, your MINI will be very upset!

I think I had mine up to about 15 or 20 mph. I was going backwards down a street on day and I scared my passenger when I told them to hold on I was going to whip it around. But needless to say she stopped me from doing it. I wan not sure how fast I was going for sure, because I was looking backwards, but I floored it for a second and then just tried to keep her straight.

OK, now that we've got that settled, I've always wondered how long my MINI would float if I duct-taped the doors closed and drove into a swimming pool. Any guesses?
I calculate 43 mph for acooper s at 6950 final gear ratio of 11.131
and 33 mph for a cooper 5 sp. at 6750 with final gear ratio of 14.105
the cvt has a reverse ratio of 10.854... I forget the redline,
if it's 6000, then it'd be 38 mph.

Going backwards always reminds me of this song for some reason.
Oh Rapid Roy that stock car boy
He too much too believe
You know he always got an extra pack of cigarettes
Rolled up in his T-shirt sleeve
He got a tattoo on his arm that say "Baby"
He got another on that just say "Hey"
But every Sunday afternoon he is a dirt track demon
In a '57 Chevrolet
(I miss that guy)

>>what is the theoretical limit on a stock Cooper for reverse?
Theoretically it depends in whether you're going in reverse uphill, downhill, on a flat, in addition to the redline limit of the vehicle.
I suggest trying it on the flat, taking careful note of the speed when your engine blows. Then get back to us.

Back in my dumber-days (high school) I had a Mitsu Eclipse Turbo. It ran side by side with a good friends 5.0 GT in forward street races. One day I discovered that the turbo had no idea if it was going forward or backward it just engaged. I did a few trial runs, then offered to race the Mustang. We found a huge parking lot where I could have plenty of room for mishaps and did our thing. Shockingly enough, the FWD Eclipse had an advantage of being rear wheel drive when it was in reverse and it was faster to about 20 or 25 than the Mustang. I only tried a few launches to about 10 MPH prior to the race. When I hit 25 or so I got scared and let off. And by the way, the torque-steer was rediculous on a turbo FWD car going backwards, probably because I was trying to use the steering wheel as a brace so I didn't slam into it when I dumped the clutch.
As I stated before, this was in my dumber days and I don't recommend trying it! Although, it was kind of funny to line up for a race with one car pointing backward. He said he gave it all he had when I took off and couldn't catch up until I let off. I wish I had a picture of that but it was before camera technology took off so it's only a memory.
