Brand new CM, engine light on

Hi All,

I have been lurking here for a few months. I took delivery of my brand-new CM in early May (base model, 6-speed manual) and have been enjoying the ride ... until today!

I did not plan on my first post being a complaint, but here I am. The engine light revealed itself today for no apparent reason. Weather yesterday was rainy, this morning outside temp was cool. Heat wave late last week and into the weekend, so it might have made sense for a temperature-related issue to trigger the light. But not sure why today.

I called the MINI dealer (which is fortunately not far from me), and the soonest I can bring the car in is Friday morning (it's Tuesday today).

The light is yellow, not flashing. I haven't even hit the 1,000-mile mark yet, so this is surprising and dismaying. I see there's another thread in this forum about the engine light ... is this a common issue?

Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom!

Many users have had various problems to date. The light really means nothing, theres 10k things it could be. There are some common problems to date, but most seem to be with the turbo models. The thermostat or something in the fuel system seem most likely.

Make sure your gas cap is on tight, thats a very commonly overlooked fix.

+1

my dad's CMS All4 had an engine light come on, he called me in a panic

asked him when he got fuel, he said he was driving home from the station

told him to take the gascap off and put it back on, problem fixed, light off

note, turn off the engine before removing the gascap

Was it the engine light? Ours flashed a window light when it was raining really hard and after turning it off, it went away.

Hello,

Our engine malfunction warning light came on for the first time this past Friday afternoon. It was the yellow warning and went out after about 5 minutes and hasn't come back on since.

We took it in yesterday thinking probably just an over-boost warning or some non-event since it only came on once.

Turns out we need a new variable valve timing module, sounds like it has a bad sensor. We're told it's fine to drive for now. Gas mileage may be a little lower and the part will be in next week.

Hadn't seen the valve timing module listed as an issue so I thought I throw it out as another cause for the light to come on.

Thanks,

Mike

Thanks for the replies. The light is still on and has never turned off. I tried adjusting the gas cap, and the car has been driven (turned off and on) a number of times in the past two days since the light came on. I have not noticed any difference in performance before or after the light.

I'll report back what I find out from the dealer in the morning.

I'm getting to the point where I just accept whatever Zaftig does. His light came on, then went out. He seems to be just fine, but I'll bring it up next time he's in the shop.

You only need to worry about engine lights when they're flashing or when you get the half-engine light (half of the symbol is illuminated). otherwise it's probably just a faulty sensor that needs to be reset. I wouldn't worry too much about it. I'm sure it's nothing. Also, all error lights that appear on your dash are stored in your car's computer so the next the it's plugged in, the dealer will see it and rectify any/all problems.

Sorry for the late update. According to my receipt, the fault code was "DMTL pump minor leak" ... the dealer replaced the DMTL pump.

(I found out what the DTML pump is here: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...86-post10.html)
