Hey everyone I want your opinions . Is the Cabrio considered a girly car or do men drive these too .? I like Cabrio been wanting one it should I consider another brand let me have your opinions please .

Topless motoring is motoring at it's best regardless of who is behind the wheel. The only time the top goes up is when my co-pilot whimpers about the extreme temperature or in the case of percipitation. When non believers make snarkey comments I take them for a ride. Their silence upon returning from their ride tells me that they had sorely misjudged the MINI cabrio's characteristics.

 

I like the way you think. My wife was not so keen on me getting a Subaru wrx . So she suggested a mini I know she like the vert I saw a few at my local dealership today and it got my wheels turning . Besides I have never owned a Cabrio would like to experience one life is short.

I needed the utility of a hardtop for having a GSD as an occasional roadtrip companion, otherwise I'd be in some soft-top'd MINI.

Go for it.

 

Yes of course men drive it too, but let's be blunt. There is a large segment of the population that thinks of MINI's (whether hardtop or convertible) as girly cars. Some people are self conscious about the image they want to project about themselves, and others care more about how much they like the car in other ways.

 

Go with the cabrio if that is what you want. I love mine. I try to keep the top down as much as possible, my wife does not like it down when its too cool out.

 

The vast majority of the convertible Mini drivers I see here in the DC area (including me) are men.

OK, now you are commited to the objective. Three things to add to your kit from the get go.
1. a light in sight at http://www.lightinsight.com/
2. a wind deflector with case. Make sure it is for the right model. The R52 uses a different one than the R57. If you pop for the roadster, the 2013 R59 with the semi-auto top includes a wind deflector. Not sure if it is included like that on the 2012 model.

Flynbrick, is your user name have anything to do with the F-4 Phantom? We used to call it the flying brick in USAF.

 

I have had a few other convertibles, but this is the only one I have loved. I hardly ever drive with the top up except in the winter. If I were buying now, I would seriously consider the Roadster but I do like all the room in my back seat for a suitcase, cooler, etc., when we travel.

Some tips: In really hot weather - yesterday it was 104 - turn the AC on high and direct it to your feet. In cold weather, put the windows up and turn the heater and heated seats on. If it rains lightly, don't stop and the rain will deflect.

As I have told others, you can always put the top up...but if you have a hardtop, you can never put the top down. And topdown motoring in a MINI is great fun.

My 26 years old son calls it a girley car and for that reason he won't drive it...to which I say "Great, I don't want him driving it anyway."

 

I always heard the F4 called the big ugly but then I've been called several different things over the years too. A pretty good HS friend flew that beast off a carrier deck in the Tonkin Gulf back in the day. Fly'n brick is what we called an Austin Mini in a sports car club I belonged to back in the '60s because of the way it flew around the cones. When I finally got a MINI 4 years ago that name just came to mind and sounded like a good screen name.

 

Had a guy make a similar comment. Invited him for a ride. I had just been thru a shake down tour getting acquinted with a strong rear sway bar. I took him out on a very crooked road. He was muttering some stuff but I was too busy to listen and when we got back his entire tone and demeanor had changed. All I said upon return was the many people grossly underestimate these little motors. He agreed that it wasn't really all that girley.

 

I have owned convertibles for over 30 years and have never enjoyed one as much as I have enjoyed the last 3 years with my MCS convertible! I couldn't care less what anyone thinks - I drive it because it is tremendous fun. It is a road legal go-cart. You are right - you only live once - go for it!!

 

Go for it. I drive my wife's vert sometimes and it can be fun! I do prefer my Clubman but I don't worry about what people say when I drive hers!

 

I had not heard of the lightinsight and am really glad you posted it. Some how, I am usually the first car at the light many times so this will come in handy. Just been too busy before to remember to look for something to fix the issue of having to fold my neck sideways and look up out of the corner of my eye. I bet people thought I was sleeping or something

Also, I'll add that I do have experience with both wind deflectors in an R57. The older model will fit the car but be too deep and press into the back seat. That will leave a dent in the punch leather if left there over time. It doesn't happen so much if you take it out after each ride. hope that helps.

 

I bought "Light In Sight" when our son told me that hubs made him stand up through the sunroof at traffic lights on the way to school every morning.
