My plasti-dip blackout experience.... Magic in a can

So I made up my mind to black out the chrome on the mini. Was going to do it the hard way by removing trim and painting it properly..... Then came plasti-dip. I picked up a couple of cans. Didn't even use one full one anywhoo

Magic in a can!!!!!

What it looked like before. Only shot I really had of the front end for a before pic.

Masking off done. This stuff is pretty easy to mask for. Leave gaps to peal excess off.

First coat.

And final finish. Will have to get a couple of spot with a razor to clean it up. Any spray left over is easiely removed by rubbing it off.

More to come!

For more information just YouTube it. There are many how too videos.

Looks good man. I was thinking about doing this as well but on the fence about it on dark silver.

Interesting approach. I always remove all of my trim so no taping off is necessary.

I see to have better luck finding it at Home Depot rather then other hardware stores.

Some of my parts I removed, others I did not (like the door handles). The removed parts do usually look better but to each their own.

Thanks!
Do you plan on doing the silver trim that runs along the bottom of the windows?

Up here in Alberta we get it from home hardware. I will be looking to do the door handles, gas cap, and the trim around the windows. I was thinking about removing it but will more then likely tape it off and use a razor or something to cut my edge.

This is the first time I've seen PlastiDip in a spray can. How well does it hold up on the front of the car to bugs, chips and scratches?

I redo mine every 6 months so that it comes off easier and the chips are kept to a minimum.

And the first coat.

This will require some handy razor work before removing the masking.

Very easy. It just peels right off. It uses the crease as a brake point. Depending on the area, you might have to take a razor and trace out parts you want black.

And the start of the unmasking.

And how she sits now. Had to do some work with the razor but I think it turned out good. Only a couple small **** ups lol.

It has a slight texture but not as bad as when it's wet.

Ok I've read a lot about plastidip on this forum. I like my chrome so there that's out. What I'm wondering is how this stuff holds up over time. Has anyone had plastidip applied for some time who can share how it has held up? Every story is how I just did this and it looks good. Nothing on the durability.

I did my belt line with it about 2 1/2 years ago and it still looks great.
YMMV

I've painted my door handles twice because with constant use it peels enough to become crap in about 6 months.
