can i take apart the rear seats?

i found a bunch of electric door openers at a garage sale the other week. got em for dirt cheap

anyway, i thought itd be cool to install them into the rear seats, so that i would not have to pull the latch manually, but i could rather press a button to actuate the door opener, thus unlatching the rear seats for easy folding

what i cant figure out, is how the backing comes off of the rear seats. has anyone tore their seats apart yet?! help me out!

Thanks!

In reply to the OP, yes they come apart. I did it to reupholster them (subject of a future how-to when I get around to it). I have pictures, but they're on my other computer - I'll try post some tomorrow. The grey felt stuff pops out - it's just pressed into the steel channel around the perimeter. You have to be careful though because it's fairly fragile and if you bugger up the edge it is going to be near impossible to get it back in. You won't find much room in there though. When you take off the mouse fur it will just reveal a flat steel panel. If you want access to the latch mechanism you will probably have to take off the upholstery and seat cushion together (they are glued together), but even then I don't think there is much room unless you want to cut pockets in the foam.

For that task I'd think you'd want something like an electric trunk actuator rather than a garage door opener. You looking for a 'drawbridge' that would go both ways?

Pictures I promised

Here are the pictures I promised yesterday:

The first picture shows the grey stuff being pried up. You don't have to remove the bezel around the release handle (I couldn't figure out how anyway) because you can wiggle the cover off without it. The second picture shows it completely off and with the upholstery released from the channel as well. In the third picture you can see the seat back cushion released from the steel frame, but they are still held together by the headrest guide tubes that can be a bit of a bear to get off. As you can see, there isn't a lot of room to play with. Putting it all back together requires a deft touch, so don't attempt this unless you fancy yourself as reasonably handy.

Well, don't stop there. May as well add a motor to fold the seats electrically.
