Has anyone done a DIY muffler delete on the hot side boost tube?

I'm a little short on funds and I want to delete the intake muffler on the hot side boost tube. I'm thinking I can do it for about $10 with some pvc pipe and some high heat black spray paint. What I want to know is 1) Is there any reason I shouldn't do it this way? 2) will 3" pvc pipe work here and how long should it be? I'm trying to gather info before I go tearing it apart to minimize install time. I like to have everything down to a science before I tear into any kind of install. Lastly, would it make sense to sand down the inside edge of the pipe to make for a smooth transition or would it be a waste of time?

Thanks for the link, that definitely helps with the install. Now I just need some input on replacing the muffler itself. For now I just want to get rid of the muffler piece and keep the factory tube. Eventually I will replace all of the tubing including the turbo inlet (from the air filter) but as I said before I'm broke most of the time lol.

You can take out the meffler and a metal tube between the 2 rubber parts.

it is at the bottom of the page. You can also go out and get a pipe from an aftermarket company with a warranty backing it up and a custom part. Also if a cop pulls you over and decides to be a ***** and look at your work and sees that it is some garage built ricer part he might right you a ticket. Not saying it will happen but, there is always that chance.

We don't have that problem here in NC and if it didn't look right, it would stay. That's why I am going to be painting it black to blend in.

So does anyone know if 3" pvc would work and how long the section needs to be? I say 3" because a coworker has some and will provide the pipe and cut it for free.

Not in NC but, Cali and some of the sates out west yes. Make sure 3" pipe will fit the stock hosing first.

I just went out and looked at it and it looks more like 2.5". I might just have to take a trip to Lowes after I get the muffler off.

Sorry to raise this post from near death but I believe the OEM hoses between the turbo muffler are 2".

I done this mod. Costs me about $3 for the pipe.

I got mine at napa auto parts.
I asked them if they can cut a 2" OD exhaust pipe about 8" long.

I actually never ended up doing this mod. I never could find time when I made the original post and it just slid over to the back burner. I can get a 2" OD pipe for cheap and use a handheld tubing cutter at work (I work at a parts store) now that I know 2" will work. My next oil change is due soon and I will probably getting a BSH torque arm in the coming months so I have no excuse not to do this now. Thanks NY_R56 for the info!

I have a 2013 MCS on the way and so I am looking at mods that I will want to do. What kind of improvements can be had by doing this mod? More HP, Faster Turbo spool, or what? I know the sound will be a bit louder but does it sound good and is that all you gain by doing this mod?

I think this mod is like a intake mod I've done. (Direct cone filter on MAF.) There is little to no gain in power. But if sound is what your after, this mod is for you.

Agreed! This wont do much other than give you an increase in sound (perhaps) and a more efficient path for airflow which is never a bad thing. I doubt there is any power increase that could be measured. I'm doing the mod because it can be done cheaply and since ill have the front end off to install my Helix IC I figured why not.

I installed the Alta tube just a few weeks ago, so I got the muffler out of my slowly accumulating box of stock parts and measured it. According to my micrometer, the OD of the muffler connections is 1.97". The body is 5.5" so an 8" length of 2" OD pipe is perfect.

Thank you for checking that. The less involved any kind of install (especially a cheap one) has to be the better. I will report back with my findings as soon as I get around to it.

Alright guys I finally got this done. I was on vacation in my hometown this week and had my Euro master mechanic friend help me out. What took him 10 minutes would have taken me quite a bit longer! As previously stated 8" of 2" diameter exhaust pipe was perfect. Total cost with paint was less than $15.

I am looking at doing this mod soon but I did see one thing on the link http://www.vipcustomparts.com/engine%20parts%20page.htm they say "We do not recommend this on 2011+ N18 motors." Why is that? I have a 2013 MCS and so just wanted to check on what all of you thought about what they said.

That sounds kind of silly. What can it possibly affect? It isn't monitored, and the increase in airflow (or decrease in turbulence to be more accurate) isn't enough to affect anything that is monitored. I haven't had any problems whatsoever in the past week. The only thing it did was satisfy my strong urge to get rid of that stupid muffler and make a little more noise. If anyone has any idea why they would have said such a thing please tell us!

Ya I see no reason not to do it but I've not looked at an N18 engine in person. Like stated above though, if the dumb muffler is there it need'nt be. Pointless IMO. I most don't see any reason why it's more important to the N18 than the N14.

I did this mod. I used this pipe:

I figured pipe with heat sink > pipe without heat sink. Especially in the hose going into the intercooler. It probably doesn't help much, but if it helps a little it's worth the $40. Installation went slick as a whistle.
