Rear Exhaust Delete ?

Is there anyway removing the rear exhaust, and going strait pipe to tips, is going to increase HP/Torque? Any relation to back pressure that far back as well?

It's do-able for sure. Are you thinking of replacing the downpipe as well or just going straightpiped from the downpipe back? The majority of your power gains will come with a catless downpipe, but you'll definitely get some serious sound out of straightpipes either way. It would be a custom job, but not too hard to do for any exhaust shop. A month or so ago I was checking my exhaust for leaks and ran the car without it on for a day (i.e. just the stock downpipe)...needless to say it was quite beastly sounding.

I was more referring to middle resonator back...so literally just cutting off the rear exhaust right before it "Y"s into the muffler, and replacing that part with a strait pipe, then to the tips out the back of the car. (this is on a R56 s)

I need the cats for emissions tests yearly...I understand they restrict our flow the most right

Ohh okay, got it. Still wouldn't be hard for any shop to do, but you wouldn't be getting much of any performance or sound I don't think. It would be a little bit louder, but yeah, without being able to get rid of the cats there's not much room for performance improvement.

I feel you with the emissions tests. I'm currently in the process of switching my cars registration over to GA from TX so that I can go catless all the way. If you're stuck with those regulations, though, I would recommend considering getting the piping and hi-flow cat from an aftermarket exhaust and then performing your intended modification. I have the Invidia cat-back which still passes any emissions tests, but has a higher capacity cat and larger piping. I think if you used that you would get more of the performance and sound you're looking for.

You wont get any noticeable power with the cats in place, simple as that... might sound good though. Post pics! and a vid!

It does right before the Muffler...it splits into two as it goes into the muffler

As so:

Thank you Thumper!

Yes..thats where Im talking about cutting in, removing muffler, putting strait pipe into new tips.

The Sound is AWESOME!! I couldn't believe how much the muffler kills the natural sound. There is a deep lobe and purr at idle, and roar at acceleration! It completely satisfied my thirst for better sound. Plus I got new tips that I like a lot better than stock, so it looks good as well.

In the cabin it is louder, and more "present" when gas pedal is being pushed. At idle its still virtually silent in the cabin.

There is a bit of "drone" on the highway or just cruising..but its not annoying..its part of the deal..car sounds mean now!

My original question: does this mod affect back pressure, HP or Torque in anyway? Getting slightly better MPGs overall now.

I have an Alta CAI, so the car feels stronger...but could be the ButtDyno talkin...

So I take it you have already done it then? Why cut it. Should have just went and got 2.5in pipe and taken it straight back. Especially with a catless d and you would for sure be getting pulled over.

I guess nothing is mean compared to 1200 whp street legals...But within the MINI world I think anything near 300 is pretty damn mean!

Just my opinion. Not pickin fights here.

Word travels fast.lol

I can say this about being a previous mini owner, I hated it when people referred to the hood and hatch as the boot and bonnet.

Back on topic, deleting the muffler is exactly what the B-Spec MINI race cars do, and it sounds much more aggressive without being crazy loud. I was surprised when I heard it, actually. The official B-spec Muffler delete system will be available for purchase soon, as well. Of course, that's for Coopers only, not the Cooper S/JCW.

Do you have any videos on your website of the Bspec exhaust?
