Talking Paceman / Countryman Coupe

Spotted - The Paceman / Countryman Coupe

I must say, that evoqued quite a guffaw. I had no idea we were in the same league.

LOVE IT! When they develop the JCW version I'll have one! While I love the CM the CM Coupe better suites my needs.

I dunno. Our friends at BMW have some weird ideas. I'm still trying to figure out just what an X6 is suppossed to be ...but yet people are buying them. I was thinking of the Paceman as sort of a modern day Chevy Nomad. Maybe I'm just showing my age and/or am too conservative. Just saw my first Evoque today....wwwwweird!

I thought the Paceman concept shown last year was very cool.
This version's roof-line drop is slightly different.

However, I'm not sure this vehicle fills any demand void in MINI's lineup. Unless, the new MINI Coopers are going to get smaller, which is rumored to be the case.

While some may equate it's looks to the rear slope of the Evoque this is a silly comparison in my opinion. This roofline is really nothing new to MINI. The hatchback's roofline slopes as well and always has even if to a lesser degree. The biggest complaint's with the CM as I've read/been told is the size. The CM Coupe will fill a roll for MINI in that it should be available in ALL4 spec but be smaller than the CM currently is. I think this car dressed in JCW garb will look killer! There is talk of the CM and the CM Coupe being developed in GP form at some point as well.

Not that it matters to the consumer but I imagine in time the current MINI WRC car will go bye bye and be replaced by this.

The last two photos of the CM Coupe show, seemingly, two different versions of the concept. The front one has a larger grille than the rear. You can tell the difference by comparing the height of the grille to the height of the headlights. Presumably, the front one would allow more airflow and benefit the turbo (S) engine while the rear's smaller grille would be more appropriate for the non-turbo.

UPDATE: took another peek at the grilles and now I'm not sure. Obviously the trim on the grille is different but they looked a bit different. Perhaps is the 1960s creeping back up on me...

IMHO, I think Leader has an interesting insight into the positioning of the Coupe vis a vis the new Hatch...

Interesting that it lacks roof rails.

I hate they simply redesign the second half of the countryman and claimed to be a "new car". Obviously this does not even make a scratch on land rover evoque.

What we want is a completely new car with new design and more powerful engine!!!

Who is this we? Why a complete redesign for a car that works?

The proportions from the A-pillar back don't look right to me. the conflicting lines of the roof sloping downward and the hips sloping upward looks like a design error.

It looks like a Countryman got rear-ended by a fiat 500.

or possibly just narrowly escaped someone with a shrink ray?

I'm looking forward to seeing more BMW marketingspeak about the Countryman Coupe (formerly the Paceman). Their prose provides a rich, dessert-like treat while 'explaining' the design features of the car. I wonder how they'll marry the more dynamic stance and aggressive Coupe sloping roof with the Countryman rising muscular beltline into a new standard of minimal visibility out the powerful rear of the car.
The selling of merging ALL4 with the basic engine should also be enlightening.

You're being a little harsh, the Countryman range was always going to grow, just like the R56 hatch, it grew to Clubman, Cabrio, Coupe, Roadster and now the Van. The Coupe is the first extension and I suspect there will also be a Cabrio sometime down the road.

i like the way where the license plate go in the back.
I think the current countryman's hatch too bold. They should move the license plate from bumper to the hatch.

I dig it, can't wait to see what the production model turns out to be! I love our R60 ALL4, would love something a little smaller and more responsive with the ALL4. Might be the replacement for our R53 someday. Maybe....

Oh - and make it a JCW!

Can anybody offer a rational explanation why this will be priced at a premium to the Countryman? Less sheet metal, same drivetrain. Nice work, beancounters!

I don't like the name...

Also I can't decide how I feel about it. One day I look at it and think cool concept other days I think it's hideous. I think I need to see an actual car and not just drawings to decide.

Agreed, the name doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, but your post gave me an idea about why it will be more expensive than the Countryman; all those extra letters they have to manufacture and apply to the boot. Just imagine the labor involved with that! Easily worth $1500 or so premium over the CM.

If they come out with a JCW version I will trade my newly purchased 4 door in for one in a heartbeat!!! My initial want was for a 2 door, compact, AWD, good MPG. There is nothing out there like that, so if they knock off a set of doors from the Countryman this would be my dream ride. Esp in a JCW version.

Rational explanation: 2 door vehicles are positioned as sportier and appeal to people for whom style counts more than practicality. These people either have more disposable income or are more willing to pay for style or both.

Incidentally, BMW has been pricing 2 doors higher than equivalent 4 doors since the beginning of time. Check out an equivalent 3 series sedan / coupe or a 5 / 6 series. The 650i coupe starts at almost 30k more than the 550i sedan and it's pretty much the same bones.
