Breyton GTS-R + 5mm spacer fitment
Breyton GTS-R + 5mm spacer fitment
Put my new Breyton's on today (props to Alex@tirerack for hooking me up with these) and just wanted to make sure the fitment is OK... To clear the JCW calipers, I'm running a 5mm H&R spacer which is just a basic wafer-type deal; it's thin enough to leave plenty of the center flange exposed for the wheel to sit onto in theory, BUT the Breyton's have a taper cut into the hub where it accepts the flange that more or less eats up the remaining flange post-spacer. To the best of my estimation via feel, the center flange just engages the hub of the wheel when it's set perfectly square onto the car - but I want to emphasize the word just. I know there are folks here running these wheels with a 5mm spacer on their JCW's - am I going to be OK? This wheel / tire set will see light track and autoX duty, so I want to be sure I have a solid setup.
Hard to say for sure - I *think* I felt the wheel center itself up as it (presumably) sat onto the flange, but it was definitely on by just a thread if at all... It's certainly not like you could throw it up there and hang it like you could w/o the spacers.
I run 6mm spacers on my R53 for my S lites to clear my 12.2" Wilwood BBK. The S lites have my winter tires on them. Run OZ Ultraleggera at track and don't need spacers. One issue you may have it that you might need longer studs or convert to race studs and nuts, which is what I've done. No issues with the spacers in terms of hub centric for me.
I never did like how they taper the edges of some wheels. I guess it helps sit the wheel when mounting but it sucks for small spacers.
I swapped out my stock bolts for longer ones, so no issues there. I did retain the shorter stock locking bolt to discourage theft, but I figure the other three proper size ones will do the job for street driving - I have a set of the longer ones on standby in the toolkit swap in at performance events.
I survived a ~4 hour trip down to NJ and back this weekend - complete with a good beating over NY's excellent road surfaces - without anything coming loose, shaking apart, catching fire, or exploding. There were isolated moments of very minimal vibration felt through the wheel, but I assume it was more the increased translation of road surface detail that I have to get used to again after switching back to proper tires, vs something problematic.

Sharon bought my factory challenge wheels, so she saw them in person... And they do look a little better in person (hard to get a decent photo without the right lighting because of the contrast between the wheels and the paint).

Absolutely - My effective offset w/ the spacers is 45mm, so the edge of the tire and subsequently the wheel-gap is now REALLY apparent. On deck is a set of TSW or Swift springs and poly fCAB's, with adj. rear control arms, a bigger RSB, and perhaps even a set of Koni yellows getting thrown in depending on how I do in the market this week. But I have to say, just getting a proper set of tires on the car has made a world of difference in the precision of the car - the front end in particular. It still bump-steers an absurd amount and I can't yet comment on torque-steer, but I was surprised to find that straight-line stability under heavy braking improved notably - and obviously turn in, cornering stability, lateral grip, and road feel are substantially better.

I though about your exact same setup as you and when Tire Rack informed me I would need spacers I backed off for now and stayed with the OE wheels.
I do notice Breyton have MINI specific version of this wheel but only in black 18" that apparently does not require spacers and have +40 offset. Decisions, decisions.
