I want to get new ultra light wheels i.e. 12lb range.
Can't find one that fits over Stop Tech brakes. I
absolutly do not want to use spacers....Any ideas??

Bad4Fun Welcome to NAM. UUC is coming out with a big brake kit that will fit under stock 17 inch wheels and will use corvette c-5 brake pads. I have mine pre-ordered with Randy Webb at Web Motor Sports. Give him a call. Just don't wait until next week. He will be in Oregon doing the maps for the new UniChip piggy back chip that he is going to offer.

Cheers,

JD

I think you'll have to use spacers if you want Stoptechs. SSR Comps, which are very generous inside, wouldn't fit over my Stoptechs without a 5mm spacer. I understand your reluctance to use spacers, but I've installed wheel studs which give me a higher level of comfort that they'll stay in place and not be such a pain to deal with when I mount wheels. They also widen the track a bit, which is a good thing, right?

Volks might fit, and European car used forged BBS wheels over their Stoptechs, but they didn't say if they fit without a spacer.

JD,

Thanks for the welcome... I have been a daily follower of the
NAM chronicles..I would like to think I have learned a few things,
and avoided needless purchases. I probably won't race this car
on the track, however the runs I have been on around here have
been ALL OUT. My car is around the 200/215hp range with my
current mods, so it has plenty of GO, I just think I need a little
more STOP. I saw the brakes you mentioned, but if they use a
near stock sized rotor, how much better can they be than upgrading
the stock rotors to sloted with better pads?? Then the wheel issue
is no problem.

Mark,

Thank you for your reply.. Most of the light 17" wheels that I have looked
at are 42mm offset. I have H-Sport springe and plan on using Kumho MXs
in 215/40/17 Correct me if I am wrong, but wouldn't using a 5mm spacer
with a 42mm offset wheel amount to using a 37mm offset wheel? If that is
true, I think I would have lots of rubbing issues.
What do you think.

Well I know that the 2 promini cars use the BBS RGRs which have a 38mm offset. Their cars are slammed and they also use the same tires you are interested in and they have claimed to have no rubbing issues.

Chuck,

I do rember seeing those cars somewhere? I think they
are running a ton of camber on the rears, which would
make them clear...My car is mostly a street car, 4/5 days
a month really hard driven, so I wouldn't want to run that
much camber all the time...?

What do you think?

Bad4Fun, the rotors are 12.2" in diameter. With that and the size of the calipers I think that you will have plenty of stopping power. Besides, You can have a large selection of brake pads. That is why I am planning to use this kit.

Cheers,

JD

MY OZ's with 37mm offset don't rub except when I hit extreme bumps. I think if you add a little negative camber you'll be fine.

Mark,

Thanks again, If you have read along this thread you will have seen a
couple of other suggestions and examples: The BBS-RGRs are a 38mm
offset and as is stated, not sure if they were using spacers. I checked
their web site and it says they are using 205/40/17s not 215s. I was also
looking at the Tar-Ox 6 and 10 pot kits cause they use a slightly smaller
rotor. 318mm vs. 328 but that doesn't mean the caliper will clear? I haven't
checked the weight of the RGRs? As far as the wheels go the Centerline at
13.5lbs for $279 seems pretty good, a pound less costs $355 SSR Comps,
and 2lbs less at 11.5lbs approx. $460 ???? I guess its only money, but
where do you draw the line.....IS THERE A LINE??

If you choose Stoptech brake kit, BBS RVF is only 7.1 kg and can fit the brake no spacer.... Tarox have smaller size Caliper...so you will have more choice of rim..

BBS RVF? Is that available here in the US? It's not listed on Tire Rack's website. As another MINI owner running the Stop Tech's (OZ Chrono EVo wheels) I'd like to find a "spacerless" solution as well...I also like wheels

I think randy has BBK that fit in the original 17" for slightly under 1g for front set.
I believe the brand is UUC....

According to Stop Tech (who, in turn, actually checked with Team Dynamics in England) the 17" Team Dyanmics Pro Race 1's -w- a 45 mm offset will work with their big brake kit.

I went ahead and got the Pro Race 1's for that reason in anticipation of getting the Stop Tech's in the future. Now, all I need is the $$ for the big brakes!

Thanks for the info on the team dynamics wheels. I'll keep
those in mind. At almost 15lbs they are a bit heaver than
I would like, but the price is sure right!! The only reason I
need light wheels is to make up for being "OLD" and having
slow reflexes.(faster acceleration) (faster brakes).........
And of course nothing makes up for skill

Excelent record keeping allowed me to provide the PDF!

The 17x7.5 ASA KA 3 will work, seeing if GT7 clears.

Can someone tell me the problem with spacers? I have 17" BBS RGR's and would love to install the stop tech brakes.
2. If spacers is a bad idea...how about brembo or something similar?
If you know the pricing great, but that is not a concern at this moment, would rather learn which is the best option with my set of wheels.

PS: And yes I do like the red color, but don't want JCW's.
(thought I get that out of the way)
thanks guys.

The use of spacers has not proved to be a big deal for me, with my current setup. My previous temporary setup was not proper though.

It can prematurely wear the bearings out due to the change in fulcrum point of the suspension load, after the track is widened with the use of spacers.

I had the stock S-Lite rim, over the Brembo calipers mounted to my car. 20mm spacers were needed to clear the caliper, causing rubbing under the wheel arch.

As you probably know, widening the track further pushes the wheels even further to the corner, theoretically allows for marginally better threshold turning capability, "all things equal". (When is that ever the case, though? )

But it increases your turning radius, though.

My wheel fit chart may help you a bit with regard to what you're looking for.

My kit or another it doesn't matter; this explains the issues you have to deal with. Some calipers offer more room than others, some rotors and some hat offsets also change this. Get the data off your wheel and use it to quiz the kits you are shopping. If they don't know the answer....well, move on.
