R50/53 Catalytic converter help???
Catalytic converter help???
Maybe someone could direct me to a thread or share some advice. I have an 04 R53 with and Invidia Catback system and megan racing headers. I am currrently using the test pipe with no cat but need to install one for smog purposes. Will an oem cat stand up to the heat of an aftermarket header? if not then what kind of high flow replacements are available that will get rid of the CEL and stand up to the heat?
I ended up using the test pipe as a reference and making a second pipe section that has the oem catalytic converter in it. I just took two flanges I got from a local shop, cut the oem cat pipes flush with the ends of the cat, and welded them at the necessary angles. It took a little time and patience but the cat and two flanges fit perfectly in the test pipe space. I just use the cat pipe to smog then switch it back out for the test pipe. From what i have read the oem cat is one of the best options that can stand up to the heat and some of the aftermarket systems have been known to fail internally. I only use the cat temporarly but I know people that use it permanently. Hope this helps
Can be expensive too
I was not able to find a used one with a good cat on it. Most people replace the header due to a failure such as the very common weak weld just before the cat blowing out. This is what happened to mine so rather than spend $$$ on a new one or try to fix the hard to see weld I just salvaged the cat on my leaking header and did a flange set up on an aftermarket header. I guess it all depends on your situation.

I have this problem! I have been quoted about $1800 to get a new part. Is there a better aftermarket option to get this fixed? Has anyone had this problem and know what part I need? It seems it is after the manifold as the pipe bends to meet up with the catalytic converter. Any help would be appreciated.

If you dont wanna fork out 1800 for oem catalytic converter and manifold setup you can do what I did which is a megan racing manifold. It comes with a test pipe. I just had the oem catalytic converter cut off the broken oem manifold and welded in place of the test pipe that Megan Racing sends with the header. I could send pics if interested. Cost me about 250$ total.

thanks guys. looking into both options. where would you recommend getting the megan racing header? will that cause any smog issues? I'm in CA. I currently have a stock exhaust. will that work with the stock exhaust ok?
Acallahan: you've been PM'd

I have the same issue w/my cat and after deciding against replacing the stock unit(due to cost), I opted for a Flashpoint header from WayMotorworks.com. Just got the header in and the quality of it seems to be exactly what i was hoping for. They've also received great reviews.
I use a Mynes V2 with a OEM cat. fabricated to bolt right together. NO problems with CEL's in 1.5 yrs.

I have a OEM manifold and cat. 2004 R53 with 30k miles that I might sell. I have it as a spare. PM if interested.
