Backfiring when slowing down while in Turbo mode.

My new mini backfires when decelerating, only when I am in turbo mode. Should I be worried about this?

When you say "turbo mode" do you mean when the sport button is on? If so, that's normal and one of the many charms of driving in sport mode.

Don't know if you have std tranny but this is typical on std tranny...

I'm quite sure the SME around here will tell you more about, but that's my take on it. Nothing to worry about...

Does it sound kind of like this?

You must be new to MINIs, your exhaust is made to make that sound.

According to the manual...
"Pressing the button causes your MINI to respond even more sportily.
> Engine responds more spontaneously to movements of the accelerator.
> Steering response is more direct.
> Cooper S, John Cooper Works: the engine
sounds more sporty in coasting mode
.
With automatic transmission:
> More rapid gear shifting in Sport program.

All is as intended, Enjoy!

That's what I like to hear. Bring the RPMs up and let that baby pop and burble all you want.

Well, it depends on how much it is backfiring. The stock amount for the pop and burble is fine...but if the car is actually backfiring then you have a problem.

Maybe you need a new maintenance guy, not a new exhaust!

Well I've got that lovely 'Sport Button, and when I use it, my car has a tendency to sputter in idle. I do love the sounds it makes. Like that of my beloved '08 cab S. But it also I think is causing my new girl to stall a bit. Has been doing it since we got her. Now at 2,300 mi. Stalled at an intersection last night while Sport button was engaged. I usually leave it off. Anyone know of the connection? Or am I just learning how to drive?!

I have a 2007 Cooper S, and I love me some sports mode, but I don't think I've ever heard what people are talking about. I've never done a really good inspection of my exhaust, but could this mean that it isn't stock?

My 07 S doesn't do it either... I think they "added it back" in later models.

That's correct, it was lost in some years...I think '10s if I am not mistaken.

I guess people complained about it being there......but then people complained about them taking it away haha

So now it is back!

Love the "pop and burble"...My '07 didn't have it. I thought it came with the 2011 model along with the new/redesigned engine.

The sport button also changes the throttle and make it "quicker" (along with the steering). Your girl will need a little closer attention when you press her button and a little lighter touch with the right foot. My guess is you are seeing/hearing her revs come up faster than usual and you are back off the throttle but still letting the clutch out causing it to stall.

The one thing I REALLY miss about my r50 with cat-back was the deceleration burble. I wish I kept that car just so I could hear it again. When I had a 2011 loaner the pops seemed sort of artificial....whereas with the r50 it seemed more sporty. Granted, I only had the loaner for a day and had my r50 for over 2 years...

I have taken to running the RPM's up, holding for a few seconds, and then pulling my foot off the accelerator just to hear it. It is not as loud in the CM4 as it was in the '06 S, but I guess that is what aftermarket exhaust is for.
