Weekend Warrior

Hey guys, Im a student with limited funds, especially since im building a 1960 GMC with a 305 V6 ( not a V8) and am looking to do a decent build on a my 2007 type s. I was looking at the usuals like the CAI, pulleys, computer, BOV and exhaust. Were there any other semi cheap/ quick mods that i could look into? Im not looking for a million horses under that little tiny hood, just a few more that would set me apart from all the other R56 cooper S's out there

Well there is no type S unless you are talking Acura. But on the realz nothing is cheap when it comes to the R56 but, NM motor mount insert, WMW Bov, if you have an Android phone Torque with bluetooth obd adapter, rear swap bar, better tires, and driver mod.

Student with limited funds... Modding 2 cars? You should be studying, drinking beer, and chasing girls. (not in any particular order).

Leave the modding of cars until you get a job and need to an outside distraction to keep you from killing yourself because you got a degree in Art History, and are now the best barista in town. lol

I kid, but you have to remember that a MINI is really just a small BMW, and you know what that stands for? Bring Money Withya... Modding Euro cars is not cheap. There really are no economies of scale at work here like with the bizzilion Honda's out there...

I'm been a member of forums for 5 years now. My biggest pet peeve about these places is people like you who post on peoples threads and don't help at all. I asked a few simple questions about my car, not my jobs that i have weeeknds off with or my school sch edule. Please don't reply if you aren't going to help. If you dont know that cars take planning and saving up then please dont contact me. You may help other people but your no one to judge me off of some codes on a screen.Anyways...
I did some more research last night and found some decent sounding upgrades? 15% pulleys, MSD ignition (any better than stock?) Also what about sprint boosters? I'm ordering a CAI this weekend and possibly the ignition upgrade if anyone replies back! Thanks!

What's the install time on something like that? Also with all of this stuff in mind would it be better to get a programmer or a stand alone? My buddy doesn't megasquirt. Systems out of his garage as a side job. I could do the driving time to program a stand alone but would it be worth the $500-1000?

Sounds like the research you did was for a 1st gen supercharged MINI. Pulleys and ignition won't make a difference on a 2007.

Want more power? Get the ALTA Accessport, an FMIC, a downpipe, and a hotside boost tube.

Makes sense now ha ha reduction of parasitic pull doesn't happen with turbos .. thanks for the help! Ideal power for this is going to be around 215-220. Does Atlanta make any systems to put you there or should I check into buying parts individually?

Agree, you need to go back to and do some very basic MINI research regarding R53 vs R56, etc. Good luck once you get it all sorted out in your mind.

- altaperformance.com (accessport (tune), boost tube, and FMIC)

- ebay, supersprint, akrapovic... all have catless downpipes you can buy.

With those 4 things I would think you should be close to 215.

dont forget a grille badge, adds 15+ HP ... LOL

it has nothing to do with HP but a quick install and cheap purchase that I have been told about is the NM torque arm mount insert. just ordered mine but a lot of people on this site rant and rave about the upgrade you get while driving and its only 60 bucks. sorry i didnt have cheap ideas to add HP cause like ppl have stated this car isnt cheap to mod. best of luck and some pics of your mini ??

Although the 2 best motor mods are not entirely cheap, wait and save for them instead of spending money on cheaper parts that don't help performance. They are a Tune and an intercooler. There are a couple of very good tuning solutions out there, and you should consider this intercooler: the best performing on the market:

OK sorry guys.... when I meant I want cheap it meant I didn't want to spend 3 grand in a new over powering Turbo system or the same amount on some nine speed transmission. I have my money coming in and being put aside I just need to know what'll help. Also yes I did go back and do some minor research and have been looking for my r56 mods and what not. Ill have pics up as soon as it stops raining and I can wash it!!

best of luck my man and let us know what you decided to get ... If you do have some money to throw around I did hear FMIC add a good amount of horses so id take helix advice. As I do not have one of their FMIC but one of my buddies i drive with around my area has one and swears by the FMIC upgrade ... id look into that then ...

Which part didn't you like? If you want a much faster car, buy another car. The Mini will NEVER be that fast.

Once you actually do some research (pulleys? really?) you'll find a tune and intercooler ($800, $600 ea, $1400 total) get most of what was left on the table. ANYTHING else just gets a bit more. (in the grand scheme of things) So you spend $1400 on 40 hp, or $35/hp Like I said, it's BMW, bring money withya...

What's the Max psi the stock system can handle? Should I look into boost controllers it just be happy with the boost levels? I read they they run stock around 12 lbs?! Is that true?

System max is about 20psi.The MAP sensor can't handle more than that. And you'll probably need the JCW turbo upgrade.

Most tunes will give you 16-18 psi on overboost. If you have the stock intercooler, that will be good for about 1 hard pull. After that, the heated intake air will start causing the ECU to pull timing and make less power.
