Electrical Help! How to lift out battery?
You can go to the parts store and get a lifting strap. Something like this http://www.qualitydist.net/pico-0867pt.html
The R56 (2012) battery is in a compartment in front of the firewall. It has a door on it that isn't nearly as big as the battery. It almost looks like it will be a major operation of removing the whole assembly to get the battery out. When I looked at it, I said to myself "I hope that thing lasts for a very long time!"
I just lifted it out of the battery box by the edges starting with my fingertips (2003 R50).
Hard but not too hard.
You could clamp a vice-grip to one or both terminals to lift a little and get a start onholding the sides better if you like.

Be careful not to short the tools together or touch body work to both.
