Will be going again. I have been many times since my first MINI was purchased. This year is going to be the biggest event ever.... I feel.
It's going to be packed. You can find camping spots..... but as far as rooms? You will probably have to find something farther and farther away from Fontana Village the longer you wait. Good Luck! You might be lucky and be able to find someone that is willing to share a room..... but even that will be a shot in the dark.
Best advice.... start researching NOW!... My guess you will have to commute 30 min plus to Fontana from your hotel. Just a guess?
Sign up NOW for MOTD. It's only going to cost you $5 plus anything else you might want?
Most runs are filled up already. An filling up by the minute. But to give you heads up I am going to add 2 runs that I will be leading very soon.
If all possible I suggest taking a run up to the Dragon and the whole area before MOTD in May.
Do as much research and planning before you go. Hit up the MOTD website.... and all information you need should be there.
I'm sure you will hear this from many folks .... but as far as advice.... the biggest advice I can give you is plan your trip, and stay on your side...no matter what. Drive within your capabilities and your MINI's capabilities. Every MINI is different.... and so are the drivers. Someone else that might be a newbie will be able to go faster just cause their MINI is setup better... (hope this makes sense)
IMO I would try and go more than 2 days... but that is just me. Everytime I go.... the days and hours fly by. Never seems to be enough time. But again that's just me.
Cheers!

Same thing happened to me when I bought my car in Sept of 2010. So when the day in may that the rooms opened up in 2011 (1 year in advance, minus 1 week so repeats have a chance to re-book) I called and got my 6th choice on room/cabin type. I called right as they opened, so you gotta be quick. It is slim pickings even if you are on the ball. But do not fret, there are always people who have a change of plans and look for other to take rooms over or you can stay further away and come in everyday for events.
I am going for the first time. Closest hotel I could book was in Bryson City, 30 minutes away. Figure that's not too bad. Will be there Thursday night through Sunday morning. Looking forward to it!
