My Baby is Dinged!

OMG, I was backing out of a parking space when someone in the lot decided to drive backward down the lane because the exit was blocked. Crunch!

How major a repair is this going to be?

I had similar bumper damage with additional quarter panel dent and broken tail light. It only cost $1600.

With no other damage other than the bumper cover, under a grand.
Im in Autobody, its nothing major, although Id be irate if it was my car, if you think about it, there is barely any car out there that hasnt had at least a bumper painted due to some parking lot incident, as long as they arent just spotting in the damage you will be fine. Id much rather have a bumper replaced and painted than the alternative of metal replacement

There's definitely a tear in the metal -- not just a dent.

What are the parts that are involved here?

FYI, the other car sustained a small black spot (chipped paint) the size of a pencil eraser. Nothing else. Go figure.

Well you can go get it looked at by a body shop and they will give you the right answer. Since your insurance(or theirs) should be covering it. If not, you can take the back bumper off pretty easily and take a look to see if anything is dented or broken. But from you picture looks like bumper cover for sure, the styrofoam bumper underneath, the plast molding on the bumper and the arch, and then paint. Heck you can do about 80% of it youself and have them paint it or if you are really skilled do it all you self. All in all though that isn't too bad and could have been a lot worse. Good luck and keep us posted.

The tear is in the bumper cover which is not metal but polyurethane.

Thanks -- on the way to get an estimate

Thanks for everyone's ideas. I hope it is just the bumper cover. Because I just started driving again after a long long hiatus, reporting this to the insurance company may not be something to do since I don't want my already high rate (due to not having driven for so long) to go up further. The other party was barely nicked and all they have to do is to buff out the tiny scratch. Since we were both at fault, it all seems like a wash.

I'm just sad that a banged up my lil buddy. Cripes!

Your rates won't go up if it was their fault (which if they were driving backwards it should be)

Whew!

Good news! The estimate is in and it's only $715 for the bumper cover, installation and painting. It may be more if they discover the bumper beneath is bent, but so far the body shop doesn't think that's likely. (I thought the tear was in the metal, but I was wrong, it was the plastic.)

What a relief! I can do this without filing a claim and am also feeling less guilty about my Baby.
