'Fog Light + High Beam' Mod in Detail

While reading this post, please open up the link to my picture gallery to follow along with illustrations:

This is a Very easy modification. Let me point out that this will work an '06 R50 and earlier. This mod is also detailed for a car that came from the factory with the fog lights already installed. a As for the '07's and on, I assume the fog lights are wired the same but I don't have access to the electrical schematics so I can't say to a certainty that this will work.

You will need just a few items: about 4 feet of 18 gauge wire, 3 splice connectors, and a single pole-double throw switch (On/On or On/Off/On will work)

Step 1: Remove the driver knee bolster under the steering column by giving it a quick, firm tug downward. It's tight so a decent amount of force is required. This will allow for easier access to the fog light relay wire.

Step 2: Look for the Rubber Grommet above and slightly left of the steering column connection. This is the wire bundle that contains the Brown/Green Fog Light Relay wire.

Step 3: Carefully cut away a good portion of the fabric covering on the bundle and fish out a Brown and Green wire.

***NOTE***

There are THREE BROWN/GREEN WIRES...One is thicker than the other two.
This is the one you need to work with, NOT the smaller two.

Step 4: Cut two 1.5ft sections of your 18 gauge wire and splice each into the Brown/Green wire. Then cut between the splice connectors.

***NOTE***

Take note of which wire is spliced into the Brown/Green wire CLOSER to
the rubber grommet. This goes to the R6 Fog Light relay and will be connected
to the Common terminal of the SPDT switch.

Tidy the bundle again by wrapping your work in electrical tape.

Step 5: Connect the spilced wire that goes to R6 Fog Light relay (the portion of the Brown/Green wire going to the rubber grommet) to the COMMON terminal of the switch and connect the other spliced wire (the one leading to the GMCU) to either one of the other terminals.

Step 6: Splice another piece of 1ft, 18 gauge wire to any GROUND wire you can find (I used the ground wire coming off of the ignition relay off of the clutch since it was closest and my Ground wire is Yellow) and connect this to the other terminal of the SPDT switch.

Step 7: Mount the switch wherever you'd like. I did not want to drill into the bolster so I mounted mine on the plastic piece behind the port for the OB Diagnostic Computer. In one switch position you will retain the OEM fog light behavior and in the other the fog lights will remain ON regardless of the configuration of the lights.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS A HOT SWITCH MEANING IT WILL TURN THE FOGS ON WHILE THE CAR IS OFF AND THEREFORE WILL DRAIN THE BATTERY.

Lastly, I included an edited image of the original fog light schematic. It shows, in essence, what you are doing to the system and how you are doing it. If my directions were unclear or there are any questions feel free to ask!

Did you modify wiring or did you use NCS to program the car?

My brother programmed my car in NCS to turn on the feature. No wiring needed and is done according to how BMW does it in the EU.

What is NCS? I would prefer doing it your method.
