Drivetrain Countryman CAI questions?
Countryman CAI questions?
Hey Guys,
Just saw a CAI for a countryman on mini mania that is carb approved. Does anyone have any more info on this one?

Looks the same as the VIP without the heat shield. Is anone having issues smogging their cars with the VIP?
Thanks for any info,

In San Diego, but I'm with you in spirit! Good luck and God speed, Clint!

Excellent. Do you have a general ETA? Pardon my naïveté, but does a tester mean you are closer to the beginning or the end of your quest to bring a CAI to market?

i had one more question that i forgot to ask. do we have to cut the firewall or will there be a pre cut piece sold like the ones for the r50's?
bulkhead panel yet. Once we take some more detailed measurements, I'll report back.

how many of you guys honestly think that there is a difference between the cai systems avaible right now? i really want to get one or the other this week as a present for my self. which we had someone who used both the vip and nm.
To be honest, they're both basically the same and likely offer the same benefits. I don't think there's enough of a difference to really stress between the two. Therefore, the question you should ask: Do you want a shield or an exposed filter to look at when you pop the hood and show your handy-work off?

I agree. There are two countrymen in the mini club here in Vegas. I have the NM and the other has the VIP. I chose the nm for the carb certification so I can pass smog in Las Vegas. Either one, you will love the results.
Hope ths helps,

I was looking under the bonnet of my R60 and my dad's R55. I didn't take any measurements, but it looks as if the same layout would work for both. Plenty of access to the bulkhead panel and room behind it with the vent above.
I may have to talk my dad into buying one for his car so that I can test fit it on my car first
. I'd be surprised if it took much more than a different length tube, if anything at all.
just installed it, hardest part was the vale cover bolt, everything else really easy and quick. Have to say thank you to threar, his blog instructions helped a lot. The sound is great and the car itself feels smoother. I could not ask for more.
Thanks.
R60 CAI Progress Update 5/11/12
1) The first revision of the CAD for the filter housing is complete. We're now waiting on a few quotes from vendors that will be making some of the housing parts.
2) I received 2 new filter samples today with a larger filter top than the previous ones (to make them more easily manufacturable). I need to make a minor adjustment to the CAD for the housing, but we're in business as far as filters go.
Have a great weekend.

Yea, thanks for the update Clint. A description of how it will look/work compared to your other intakes would cool. I'm just wondering if it doesn't pull cool air from the firewall area, then where. Will the noise baffles for the other models work with this intake?

I'm new to CAIs for minis, but seem to recall reading something unique about past "DOS cold air intakes" and people seem eager to get their hands on yours.
Thanks in advance.

We are still keeping important parts of our original formula such as using a closed CAI design that draws in air from the factory air inlet + an air passage in the bulkhead. -- Basically, I can assure you that the new formula for the R60 CAI will be as badass as our current R55-R59 MCS& JCW CAI.

Baffle?
We will no longer be offering a baffle option for the DoS CAI's. The baffles are a great part, but they were too expensive and finnicky to make.
We are offering covers for the bulkhead mounted inlet ports instead.

Just brought my R60 home tonight from the dealer. One of the first things I noticed is that the area between the edge of the bonnet and the windshield is solid. It does not appear to be vented as with other Minis, leading me to wonder whether there is going to need to be some aggressive body modification to get air in the engine bay. Clint?
If you look to the right of that area, you'll see a pipe opening just behind the grill. This is a direct outside air intake pipe that leads to your air intake. Current aftermarket intakes remove the airbox and replace it with a filter on the intake that leads to the engine, allowing that free flow pipe to push outside air into the remaining cavity.
