Drivetrain Countryman CAI questions?
So here's the dilemma, gents: I am planning to head up north in the near future and get an ECU tune. I'd like to have my bolt on drivetrain mods (intercooler, exhaust) in place before I do.
I was hoping to go with the DoS CAI, but it looks like that won't be available for a very long time and therefore it won't be onboard when I get my ECU tune.
So the dilemma:
Do I continue to hold out for the DoS, in which case the question is whether I can effectively "simulate" the increased airflow of the DoS for purposes of the tune by using a K&N drop in filter in the factory air box?
OR
Do I give up on the DoS and just go with something like the NM intake and call it good?
Thoughts?

Whether you do the ECU tune before or after the mods, the computer will re-learn any changes so you would benefit regardless. The only thing I would say to wait for in the tune is if you plan on installing an aftermarket intercooler, do that first and make sure to tell the tuners, because they would be able to alter the tune and adjust the timing/increase boost for more power and you wouldn't run into any problems because the IC is taking in more air and therefore the engine will be able to handle the tune tweak.
Intake-wise, I think I am going to go with the JCW Stage 1 air box. All I need to make it fit for the R60 is the lower half of a 2007-2009 OEM air box for an R56.
The N18 OCC kit will be out no later than first week of October. Unfortunately, it will only fit the R55-thru-R59 MCS. DoS will likely need to do an R60 specific OCC or mounting bracket in order for it to fit properly.
We are waiting for some quotes for the R60 CAI housing. That being said, we will definitely have the main housings fabricated & powdercoated somewhere Northern California and do final assembly in San Francisco. Should be test fitting pre-production R60 CAI parts at the very end of September --dependent on some dry filter prototypes/samples we need that are specific to this kit.

Unfortunately, DoS will not be attending Mickey and MINI 8. We will be sending along some stuff for the raffle/drawing.

Excited to see that this may finally be coming to fruition. Hopefully Clint checks in and sees just how much enthusiasm there is for this thing. I applaud Clint for making stuff for the R60 when so many companies have stood on the sidelines.
Looking forward to the DoS, fogger kit, and OCC on my R60.

yea, everyone loves the countryman cause its a mini. can't wait to be able to pop the hood and have a cool air intake in there at least. a little turbo whistle and bov pssss would be nice to.

Anyone with a CAI have any problems when having the coolant temp sensor recall done? I took my car in for my first pre-paid oil change and the SA said it was subject to the temp sensor recall. An hour later I get a call telling me they are going to charge me for labor due to the aftermarket CAI. As a matter of principle, I'm picking up the car without the recall done, will swap it back to the stock setup, and take it back in next week.
Looking forward to the survey.

It's give and take, to be honest... They don't have to touch anything that's aftermarket at all.
I've had problems in the past, but sometimes it's just better to be nice about it and hope for better treatment on the next round. Otherwise you're just going to get flagged for problems.
When you get the survey, mentioning that you have aftermarket parts installed immediately negates any of your comments.
That being said, the last two services I've had, the techs removed and re-installed several of my aftermarket parts, including the CAI. The service managers don't like the mods one bit, but the techs are pretty nice about it. The very first time I went back, I swapped back over to stock and mentioned that I did so to one of the service advisers. After I picked it up, he said "you know you can just bring it in without wasting time next time".
I brought in a couple fruit pizzas one time and ever since I've had a relatively pleasant experience. Try to work with them if you plan on modding heavily.

I'm not surprised. I figured mini would be **** about not buying performance mods from them even though they don't make any.
I'm going to ask about moding next week on my 1st free maintenance service. But i never thought a hot air intake was a good idea, even though they call it cold. All turbo cars get very hot under the hood. Dos should be cold air moving or standing still at red lights.

My dealer forgot to tighten one of the hose clamps on my intake when it was in for a thermostat problem. I'm glad I spotted it before it became a problem.
I'm taking it in this friday for an oil change and some recall, so I'll see if they complain about the turbo heat shield or strut bar. I doubt it, but who knows.

countryman-s, if you look into it harder, the intakes are perfectly effective until you're at a standstill with any CAI and the stock IC.
For someone like me, my IATs never go above ambient, and I would stall / throw into limp mode with the normal airbox -- it can't get enough air.
DoS will be bought as soon as I see the announcement, but that doesn't mean the others on the market are a bad choice by far!

chrunck, I noticed my screws on my VIP intake were loose after I lost one of the nuts going down the highway... stupid me for not checking.
Moral to everyone - check everything before you speed off. They may be nice, but might not remember every little step.

Theta, so your telling me that at a stand still the original air intake pulling air from the front of the car is the same temp as a intake pulling air from under the hood? Thats hard to understand. can you explain how thats possible?
