JCW Aero Kit Cooper question

Hi everyone. I ordered a 2012 Mini Cooper S Hardtop a few weeks back and just came across the JCW Aero Kit which I really like.

Now I am bummed that I didn't order it.

Any Aero Kit owners out there that can tell me if it's worth having? I think it looks pretty awesome.

Did you MCS car enter the build stage yet? If not just have your MA add it to the order. If it's too late, you can always have the dealership add it later anyway.

It is quite pricey though and I can't remember if the MCS has the JCW Aero installed at the factory, port or dealership for the 2012 models. The 2012 JCW has the aero installed at the factory.

My 2012 factory JCW will have the JCW aero as standard so I am quite happy about that

@walk0080 Thanks a lot. Unfortunately, it's too late. Mini is already waiting at the docks for a ship.

I'll check with my dealership if they can install it afterwards. I am sure it's going to be at least 2K.

Have fun with your new JCW.

Note that for $2k, the JCW package includes:
Aero kit
door sills
JCW 17" challenge wheels
JCW steering wheel with red stitching on wheel, shift boot, e-brake handle

A bargain, IMO!

Unfortunately, the JCW Package (with the factory installed aero kit) isn't avaiable on the 2012 hardtop or convertible MINIs until November production. Currently, only the Coupe has the option to have the JCW aero kit factory installed (and it doesn't start production until the first week of September).

Since your 2012 hardtop had an August production date, that means, that you still would of had to of gotten your JCW aero kit installed by your dealer, or at the VDC (at a substantial markup). I'm sure that you can still request it from your dealer if you really want it and don't mind paying the premium over the factory installed kit.

@subzero,

I believe that the JCW Package also includes Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) as well (a $250 option), making it even more of a bargain.

So if you break it down:

JCW 17" Challenge Spoke Wheels ($2,599)
JCW Aero Kit ($2,111 + paint & installation cost)
JCW Door Sills ($96 + installation cost)
DTC ($250)
JCW Interior Accents ($???)

Making the $2,000 JCW Package with the factory installed Aero Kit one heck of a good deal.

Thank you all for your reply. That is a sweet deal. Too bad I didn't know that before I placed my order or I would have waited until November. Oh well. Maybe I do that for my second Mini in a couple of years.

I got the kit on mine. I picked mine up the second week of July, ordered it Memorial day weekend. I LOVE it. For me, the body kit alone was worth it, but with the addition of the wheels, interior bits, and the DSC, it's a complete bargain.

This picture is after I installed my ST coilovers

My 2012 MCS with JCW Package has an August production date and is waiting at the port right now. As far as I know the aero kit was installed at the factory, but if it wasn't, there was no markup to have it installed at VDC.

@erbn,

I'd guess that your JCW Aero Kit will indeed be installed at the VDC (causing a slight delay in delivery time when compared to other MINIs that came in on the same ship without the JCW Package option). I am however supprised to hear that there wasn't any extra "installation" charge (especially since they have to paint the aero kit to match the car). I suppose that since MINI is selling the JCW Aero Kit as part of the "JCW Package", that is why you didn't have to pay any extra. Cool!

BTW, here is my source for stating that MINIs ordered with the JCW Aero Kit would NOT have the kit "factory" installed until Novermber production:

MotoringFile’s Guide to MINI USA’s 2012 Model Year Changes

The JCW Pack that was introduced with 03/2011 builds isn’t changing. However there are some small 2012 details worth mentioning...
The big news for the 2012 model year is that John Cooper Works Hardtop and Convertible will comes standard with the JCW aero kit at the factory. However, it will take a bit more time than MINI expected to ensure a perfect integration at Plant Oxford, so the kit will not arrive until November 2011 production. This means that the 2012 John Cooper Works Hardtop and Convertible will not be available for ordering until the November allocation opens.
Also, this Motoringfile article, which talks about the JCW Pack (when it was first introduced for the 2011 MY), states that the JCW Aero Kit is "available" from the factory when ordered with the JCW Package, but doesn't mention anything about it being "factory" installed:

World Premier: JCW Pack & 2011 JCW Tuning Kit

But also importantly this signals the first time the JCW aerokit has been available from the factory. So that means JCW cars can now opt for this package to get the full look.
However, the official press release from MINI claims this:

The John Cooper Works Pack is due to be available from the second quarter of 2011 as a factory-fit option.
So maybe the JCW Aero Kit is factory installed when ordered with the JCW Package, but not for the actual JCW cars (until November production anyway)??? Which really doesn't make much sense. Hmm...

IDK where the kit is installed. I know that mine only sat at port for a couple of days and then it was on the transport to the dealer. I suspect that it was installed at the factory, but I have no way of knowing that.

I would think that if it was port installed, my car would have taken a bit longer. BUT, the JCW package is only available on a few colors so maybe they have fully painted kits sitting on the shelf.

Ironically, I was just trying to place an order for the exact car you have on order, andi was told today that I wouldn't be getting the car until early to mid January. I was a little surprised by this, and the salesman said it was because of the components coming from Japan for the Mini Connect were not available until November.??

Not sure - I didn't think there was any delay for components from Japan. More than likely they just don't have any more JCW allocations at their dealership left. You never know - some sales people just make stuff up - others actually know what is causing the delay. My JCW HATCH was originally going to be in Production Nov2011... The delay was due to the standard aero kit... now it just got pushed ahead to Oct2011, so perhaps they expect to have the aero kit ready early.

Don't know what it is with car salesman but you always have to second guess what they tell you. If you don't mind me asking do you order yours below invoice? Also, I would love to see pictures of your car when you get it since I have never seen the color combination in person. It's hard to get a good idea from a computer rendering what the colors truelly look like together. I hope it looks get since that it what I am going for as well.

I haven't seen one in person, but several people on this board have a similar build...

Interior: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...8-post759.html

Exterior: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...0-post762.html

I got several thousand $ off MSRP out the door and I was happy with that.

I was told the same thing by my MA " At this time we can't put the JCW kit (or any JCW for that reason) on a car. It might be available on the next allocation, which would be available around the 10th of October or the beginning of October."

I haven't heard about any issues with the 2012 tuning kit...

If the MA enters the order as a factory jcw hatch it will require a manual... Not sure what happens with the jcw kit on a MCSa.

They had told me due to a shortage of automatic trans it would not take the order. We had to void the contract.Dealer was not happy they loose a sale. The other dealership had a slot for the automatic.Thats maybe why they could order it.Then I had read some post on here that people were having trouble on the tune for 2012 jcw tunning kit.

Interesting that there are more parts shortages again. I guess it pays to shop around for someone with a build slot.

This might help you or it might not. But check out this thread putting the kit on is not that big of a deal and you can save some money and you get to say you put it on.

I have a 2012 MCSa with JCW tuning kit, suspension, and aero. There is no problem whatsoever ordering those components *UNLESS* they are saying that there is a problem with ordering the automatic transmission due to allocation or shortage issues. It has nothing to do with adding any of the JCW packages to an automatic for compatibility reasons at all.

Now, there IS a technical problem that you might run into with the JCW tuning kit on BOTH manual and automatic for 2012. Some of the internal software in the ECU will require some extra handiwork from a tech in order to get it running, you can read more details of that issue here:

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...2012-mcsa.html

Note, if you add a JCW tuning kit to an automatic, you will lose the paddle shifters! If anyone has questions on any of the JCW packages or kits, feel free to ask or shoot me a PM.

Jon
