Window shattered no reason

I got up to go to work this morning and found this:

http://i608.photobucket.com/albums/t...s/DSC00004.jpg

http://i608.photobucket.com/albums/t...s/DSC00003.jpg

No sign of any impact? The only thing holding the window in place is the antenna wires.
Would this be a warranty claim?

I'm in law enforcement and have seen plenty of broken windows. I have seen windows break on their own. You can see no point of impact. I have read other threads about the sunroof doing the same. I would contact the dealer asap. Ask them if they want pics or for you to drive it to them like that. I don't think it would be safe to drive like that.

Seems like it could be caused by a sudden change in temp/pressure. Or it could have had a hairline crack that spread. I would def call it in!

Temp more than anything; tempered glass HATES radical changes.

Well after getting home from work I remembered that I was whacking weeds that night with a string trimmer. Must have thrown a rock but I still could not find an impact mark or chip. Temp was in the mid 90s in day and low 60s at night.

Was quoted $277 installed (not dealer) which is 2 or 3 times less than I expected.

FYI - This web site shows parts diagrams and prices. It was within a few $ of what dealer quoted (window only).

If you cant find a impact mark take it to the dealer and just dont mention the weed waking. there have been other reports of windows shattering and it should be covered by warranty.

I considered that. On the phone they were like wow never heard of that....Never had to order a side window before....
Also my dealer is 200 miles away. Would have to take a day or 2 off work. I could never make it that far without the window completely falling out - (or in). Millions of tiny pieces.
Not even worth bothering my insurance as I have a $500 deductible.
I need the window replaced now.

I think you are making the correct decision. If it was caused by the weed whacker then Mini warranty should not eat the cost of repair. Same thing happened to me while edging the house. A large family room window was broken. Whoops.

Think about cking with your insurance company about cost of changing to deductable
to lower than $500 for next time.

Unless your totally broke and live paycheck to paycheck the added cost to go to a deductible less than $500 generally does not pay off. Cost benefit analysis is definitely in order. I keep a $500 deductible on my cars but $1000 on my house. It saves significant dollars.

Regards,

Pat

check with your insurance companies--you will be surprised to find out how little it cost to have a 0 deductible on comprehensive. and that covers everything from glass to hail damage to vandalism.

Try putting some duct tape on that before you start driving to get it fixed. So if it does fall apart it will fall in one piece and not all over your seats. If you need to have someone inside to lightly hold the glass while taping from outside or vise versa.

Valid point, typically u can have separate deductibles for collision and comp! Call your insurance company to verify.

That is very strange. Those type of windows are designed to completely shatter though as a safety precaution, so it could have been a simple micro fracture that occurred and spread overnight during the change in temp.

Glass breakage is covered under Comprehensive, not collision. It's usually only a $100 deductible.

Window is fixed. Cost $277 installed. The glass installer cost was $130 for the parts which was $50 less then what the dealer quoted me. Of course they made out like bandits charging 3 hours labor and $30 for some putty.
I don't know what the dealer install would have been?
I have $500 ded. each on both collision and comp.

I went through the dealer once a couple of years ago for a windshield replacement. They charged $1400. I went through my insurance so I only paid the $500 deductable. But $1400 was EXPENSIVE and I'll never do that again!
