Last night I was merrily driving along, about to come to a stop in a left turn lane, when a car stopped in the straight ahead lane decided to pull into my lane. She hit the passenger door and rear quarter panel cutting a deep gouge in both. My poor car is only 3 weeks old. Oh well.

The good news is that the lady who hit me is very nice, and has agreed it is her fault, and that her insurance will take care of it. It looks like it's going to require new body panels, so no filler.

Ouch... no worse sound in the world than sheetmetal crumbling while your inside it.

Stay sharp on the repair work, make sure they use only BMW sourced parts and a reputable body shop. Hope everything works out and glad no one was hurt.

Sorry to hear about your car. Ours is about that old and I would be crushed if it got whacked, especially after all the waiting leading up to getting it.

In my experience the hit and run is better - our insurance covered the damage right away with no questions asked and no rate penalty. Better than having to deal with some random person's insurance.

Of course not geting hit all all is even better.

Sorry to hear that! I got whacked a coupla weeks ago, same place as you. It looks like it bent the door beam pretty good, and I'll prolly need a new door. At least two weeks in the shop, too. Check the inner part of the door where it meets the striker plate - if it's really bent, insist on getting it perfect - if they need to replace the door, don't think twice - that beam is there for safety, and you don't want that compromised. BTW - MINI doesn't sell skins, only the WHOLE door. Good luck!

BCNU,
Rob in Dago

Oh ouch!! sorry to hear that... you dont sound too mad... thats good... I would have been furious and my baby is almost a year old... talk about 3 weeks...

No not really... if you have full coverage your insurance should allow you to just take it in and get it fixed fisrt and then they will work it out with the other parties insurance and get reimbursed...

Of course...

Thanks all, I have to say that both the lady who hit me, and her insurance co (State Farm) have been excellent. She admitted fault, called her insurance, told them it was her fault. They called me, suggested reputable repair shops (which I had already validated) and booked the repair work for me. They also booked and paid for a rental car (they authorized an "exotic", but the best my nearest Hertz local edition could do was a Mitsubishi Outlander - not a bad car, but it certainly makes me fully appreciate my wonderful Mini).

At least now I can be a bit more relaxed about minor dings in parking lots etc.....although I have to say the size of the Mini and the respect others seem to have for such a work of art really helps in avoiding those too.

The "lady" and her insurance company better be nice to you...after all she is the once that caused this headache to begin with.

Today I had a close call when an older man in a Toyota pickup decided to suddenly swerve into my lane (He was doing a left hand turn and apparently realized that he had not gone far enough to take it) and to make matters worse I had 2 stupid teenage girls driving a late model Audi A4 behind me, or I should say, tailgating me.

Fortunately I always drive with both hands on the wheel and was at 150% alterness, I was able to practically match the swerve pattern of the man in the pickup truck, while shifting, blowing the horn and avoiding being hit from the rear. The MINI is one amazing car during emergency manuvers...never felt like losing control or anything, the car just seemed to read my mind and know exactly where I wanted it to go and how to get there. there wasn't even a tire screech or anything..just smooth response.
The rich teenage girls were really scared but it seems that the braking prowess of the A4 somehow compensated for thier stupid driving habits.

Luckly nothing happened at all and everyone got out of the mess quickly but I dunno the old man in the pickup truck ever heard my horn, let alone know exactly what just had happened around him.

Be careful outhere!

Don't you hate it when that happens? And on a new car, bummer!

My wife was hit in the right front fender by a 19 year old girl who decided to change lanes when my wife was right next to her. That was bad enough, and the wife's car is only a 92 Camry with 205,000 trouble-free miles on it (very clean never hit until this). I can't imagine how I would react if someone runs into my new MCS.

Good luck getting it fixed.
