R50/53 MC40 Monte Carlo 40th Anniversary MCS
MINI USA is taking the MINI Cooper S and offering 1,000 Monte Carlo Rally Commemorative Editions, aslo known as MC40. Driving the MINI Cooper S in the Monte Carlo Rally back in 1964, "Paddy" Patrick Hopkirk re-wrote the rules and so changed motorsport history. And to fully commemorate Paddy's great victory, all 1,000 cars will be identically built in Chili Red with the signature white roof, red leather trimmed sport seats (like the original), a John Cooper Works REAL Carbon Fiber Dash, driving lights, chrome grill, mirrors, and boot trim, special 17" wheels fitted with all season runflats, auxiliary guages, and a matte chrome gear **** with special inlay. See the attached photos.
Although pricing has not been released yet, this great commemorative vehicle will debut on February 4th at the Chicago Auto Show. Each car will come with a plaque with Paddy Hopkirk's engraved autograph and will be individually numbered from 1-1,000. They will start production in February with one vehicle given to each dealer for March. After that, they will be evenly built until June. Which means Lauderdale MINI will not have a lot! So, if you are interested in getting one of these collector MINI's, contact me ASAP!!

Looks identical to my MCS, down to the front chrome grille and chrome mirror caps. All I have to do is get me some number "37" meatballs for the doors..
How much is this MCS 40 edition goin to run for over a standard MCS?

I'll have a full, hands-on review of the car posted by tomorrow evening on my site: http://www.bridger.us/mini
I defintely want one, finally people will see that I was not joking. I can't wait to find out the price. Perfect car to complement my Dark Silver MCS. I would also want to get those wheels for my Dark Silver, I think they would look good.

Going to a press event tomorrow at McCormick place in chicago for a viewing of the car before the auto show and am supposed to get a plaque they will be giving away with the car, should be interesting. Will give my in person opinion tomorrow evening.
Very nice, but the mods are purely cosmetic. The MC-40 is basically a base Cooper S with 18" wheels, red leather seats, carbon fiber dash, a few exterior stickers, 3 spoke steering wheel, chrome mirror caps, chrome front grille and chrome strip above license plate in hatch.
Funny thing is that when I ordered my '04 MCS I was, without knowing it, ordering almost a MC-40 replica. My MCS is CR/W, no sunroof, chrome mirrors and chrome front grille, 16" V-spokes, Anthracite interior, Leatherette sport seats, front fogs, trip computer, auto mirror and wipers and HK stereo.
I suspect that the price difference between a base Cooper S and a MC-40 edition, will be another $3K. Let's see, between the 18" rims and tires, the leather red seats and the JCW carbon fiber dash you are already looking at $2K to $2.5K extra over a base MCS.
I honestly think that while the MC-40 is a cool idea for a limited edition vehicle (Can't wait to see the dealer mark up on them) I still prefer a base MCS or a base MCS with the JCW package. With the JCW package you'll spend a little bit more than the MC-40 and get real performance mods, not just cosmetics which are very nice but I don't feel they give you real value for your money.
But from the "collector's" point of view the MC-40 might just be the hot ticket for a car that will be "rare" and with great potential for solid resale value in years to come. But face it all MINIs already have industry benchmark resale values.

Price for the MC40 edition has just been announced....$27,000 plus $550 transportation fee.
I just configured a base MCS with JCW package kit in MINIUSA and the total comes out to $25K including destination and handling.
What am I missing here?

Kind of funny that in the pictures on MINIUSA there is a Works sticker on the carbon fiber dash, but the only Works equipment it comes with is the carbon fiber dash instead of the JCW package.
They should have gone all the way instead of half way!

Collectible? Yeah, right.
I'm with dandp on this one.
Sure, you could get more car for less $, but the exclusivity of this limited edition model will mean something years from now. I think 1,000 wise investors and their money will soon be parted, only to be reunited at a later date.
As for the legitimacy of BMW co-opting the original Mini's legacy, you might have an argument there. I probably wouldn't agree, but you'd have an argument.

"Pretty simple marketing stuff."
That's exactly what it is. The "cachet" you're paying for will have zero value in 5 years. In the meantime, you'll look like an idiot driving around in that thing.
Of course, it's your money so spend it as you wish!

Wow - I can't believe the backlash on this thing. First off it's a great looking MINI and I would urge some restraint on the negative opinions until you see it in person. Secondly it's really not much more with all the options added than a regular MCS. Finally would you rather have had MINIUSA do nothing in regards to this anniversary? That's what almost happened - this was something that they threw together for us, the enthusiasts.
FYI MINIUSA execs have stressed to me that they aren't making much money on the MC40. I was told again and again by several separate people within MINIUSA that profit was not their motive with this car. They simply felt as stewards of the brand that they had to do something for such a huge occasion as the 40th anniversary of the first Monte Carlo win. And as I said if you look at everything pricing of the car isn't that much more then if you were to get all those options separately - especially if you add in development costs for things like the carbon fiber dash (which believe it or not is an expensive piece). Needless to say they could have really gouged the public had they wanted to - now lets just hope that the dealers play nice as well.

 And I'm fairly confident that the pricing by dealers will be what they do now - some will charge MSRP and some will be over - like out here in CA.....it's a darn shame!

Maybe with the exception of the CF dash, red leather seats, Paddy signed plaque and other few odds and ends, most of the cosmetics used on the MC40 can be purchased at your MINI dealer parts counter (MY '04 MCS CR/W has chrome front grille and chrome mirror caps ordered and installed at the dealer) and some of the badges like the big chrome GB letters can be purchased from triple-c.com for $21 and they are the "real" thing made in metal not plastic.
The stickers and decals can also be purchased even have them custom made. I understand the point of the MC40, don't get me wrong but to me the MC40 needed to have the JCW Kit STANDARD for the $27K admission price. In my view, the MC40 would have been better off as a plain jane bone stock MCS (just like the original 37 Mini was) and just add the rally lights and the JCW Kit. I think the MC40 could have done just as well without fancier wheels, trip computer, Xenons, etc.
Anyway, I believe the MC40 will sell its full production run and that the car has potential "collectors" value, no doubt about it in my mind, but next time MINI decides to issue a special edition, put a greater emphasis on what's under the bonnet and less so on the cosmetics.
Just my .02 cents.
