R50/53 An Audi S3 killed my MINI
Yesterday while driving back home I was having fun with a friend who has an Audi A3 (Audi´s VW Golf version with a 1.8 liter turbo and 150 hp). We were kidding around in stop lights. From the start both cars are about the same, the MINI slightly faster, but as soon as his turbo kicks in, he easily beats me...
We were both accelerating hard in a straight line when suddenly a guy starts flashing his high beams at me (it was another Audi, a S3 the "S" version of my friend´s car - with quattro and 225 hp)
This guy left both of us (Mini and regular A3) , specially me, eating dust like I´ve never seen in my life. WOW that car is amazingly fast!
I know the A3 will be coming to the US in its second generation, so watch out Coopers, we are no match for these guys! I don´t think even a Cooper S works could beat them.

>>Sounds like a wonderful testimonial on street racing, or "having fun" as you refer to it.

>>Take it to the track before something gets killed besides your MINI!

Back to the topic at hand....I've been watching and waiting for the S3 to come to the states. Unfortunately I'm not at all enthused about the styling of the new A3.
Kinda bland in my opinion. Not sure that I would want to sell my mini for it just based on it's power. Also I'm liking the getrag gearbox and over all driving feel of the mini compared to the Audi. I sold a 2002 A4 for my MCS and the wife still has a TT. The shifters in both are very sloppy and the clutch is insanely long! But the 1.8t TT is faster without a doubt even with it's heavier curb weight._________________
Well there are lots of cars that can beat the mini in a straight, it's fun once in a while but it is nothing like the fun you get out of showing people what the mini can do in the canyons. I rather waste my gas, tires and wear out my engine/drivetrain doing that, it's A LOT more fun!

This wasn't in the states, since this was an A3 and S3, neither which is available in the states! Could have been in Germany on the autobahn, in which crazy high speeds are legal.

Are you sure the A3 has 150 hp. VW/Audi tunes the motor a lot of different ways, mostly based on boost. 150 for the Beetle, 180 for the GTI and Beetle S. I would think the A3 would get the 180 hp motor. What do I know though, we don't get that car here. (yet)
BTW, a chip on the 1.8t will get your friend 200+ hp. The boost is dialed way back.

Pre-2003 A3's came in two engine choices, the regular 150hp turbo and the 180hp turbo versions of the same 4 cyl. engine. The 180hp versions could be identified by the red "T" badging as opposed to the regular silver badging.
Current A3's all come standard with the 180hp in an attempt to keep sales up while the next generation arrives.
The S3 is 225 hp, but the quattro all-wheel drive adds a lot of weight to the car and the result is a car that's not nearly as quick as one would expect. The S3's 0-60 times have been published at 6.6 secs, easily within reach of a JCW MCS for a lot less than the Audi's $50,000+ pricetag.
By the way, Mexminime was "street racing" in Mexico, where there really is no speed limit, or laws of any kind for that matter. I speak from experience.
In any case, Mex and I were roommates for a while (that's his red MINI in my sig) and I can tell you he's a responsible dood who wouldn't do anything TOO stupid!

I really have no idea what some of you are talking about. Yea, there are faster cars than a MCS in a straightline but its not exactly slow. A MCS is not only more powerful than a 150 A3 but its also lighter. I have found that a MCS can outperform cars that cost alot more in a straightline aswell as through the corners.
Sorry about the discomfort for the "street racing". I really didn´t consider it as such, as my friend and I were just teasing each other, still I don´t justify myself: KIDS DONT DO THIS ITS DANGEROUS
The S3 just happened to passed by and decided to teach us a lesson. Even if I wanted to catch him, it would have been impossible, and that was really the main theme of the thread: WOW this Audi S3s are really fast cars.
My friends A3 is an older model which came with only 150 HP. Still this "soft" 1.8T seems awfully capable of outrunning a MCS at Mexico City altitude (turbo engines don´t loose as much power as normal cars do)
