We are going to have an ice storm here tonight and I am currious if there is ice on the windows and doors, what will happen when you open the door? Also, why do the windows do this? Is it a generally reliable feature? (I imagine that it's going to break in the up position and I'll open the door and shatter the window.)

By the way, I have no intentions of driving the Mini until the road salt has dissipated considerably.

BMW's do this as well. From what I have been told, they do this to reduce the pressure in the car when closing the doors...that is why the window jumps up at the moment you actually close the door...make the actual seal. It is normal for the window to go down when you open the car, and up when you close it. Even with Ice on the window, it only goes down about 1/8"...so you should be fine...the only thing it will rub on is the felt liners, which are flexible.

Hope that helps...
cheers

I wondered the same thing, but even with -20 temps it hasn't been a problem.

The windows will not drop if they are frozen to the weather stripping. This has been covered a bit in the MINI and the cold topics. I carry an old credit card that I insert at the back edge of the door and pull forward to unstick the weatherstrip from the window. I scrape the windows first, so when the window drops it doesn't take ice inside the door with it.

Get into the habit of watching the window closely each time you unlatch the door. I also give mine a slight downward shove from the top before closing the door.

If you adopt these habits, your car should be fine.

It is 13 degrees F here and my baby has been covered with crud for nearly a week and I couldn't stand it anymore. Took her to car wash this AM just to get the chunks & salt off. Since car was is only about 2 miles from here, decided best to take her for a couple mile run to get all temps up before puttinh her back into garage. When I got home she was covered with ice. Had to lean on door to get out. Window came down OK and went back up when I closed the door. Not clean by any stretch of immagination but, much better than before. Going to be sub freezing for next couple of weeks so, guess thats as good as it gets for awhile.
