Pop sound after engine shut off - 2011 MCS

Hey,

Brand new 2011 MCS manual. Just spent about an hour or so driving around city/suburban streets basically sharpening my manual driving skills since I just learned the day I picked it up a few days ago. After parking the car and let it cool down I shut the engine off and exited the car. I heard a noise approximately every 10 seconds or so. It sounded like the "pop" from the "pop and burble sound" that the 2011s make when in sport mode. It was coming from the back of the car...but not from the exhaust. Remember, the car was off at this point.

Note: Obviously I am new to driving a manual but I did really well tonight...No stalls and even threw a few hills in there. I suppose I am still riding the clutch a little too much but it is getting better with practice.

Car seems completely fine...nothing seems wrong..but this relatively loud popping sound after the car was off struck me as odd. Any idea what this is? Not sure if its a problem or not....just curious. I know the HPFP makes noise after the car is off and the turbo sometimes cools itself. Culprits?

TIA

Did it just happen the one time or everytime? There are various sounds that it makes once you shut it off, some come minutes afterwards. I would start it back up then turn it off and see if you hear it again. There is one pop sound that comes from the rear after a couple minutes of it being shut off which might be what you're hearing.

So here is what happened:

I parked the car and let it idle for 2 or 3 minutes while i was adjusting the radio settings. I then powered off the car and got out. At this time I started hearing the popping sound so I waited around and it lasted for about a minute or so...happening every ~10 seconds. It had some decent volume associated with it. It definitely wasn't subtle. Like I said, it reminded me of the pop and burble sound..but just the popping part of it.

Ill check again tomorrow I guess.

I get the same thing now and then on my 2010. It's never been an issue, and there's nothing wrong with the car. Sounds to me like a popping noise that is a similar association with a hot exhaust. I've never really put a lot of concern into it.

I get the same with my 2011 MC purchased end of March.

I've noticed the popping when stopped and idling a few times, but it usually happens after backing into my garage and shutting off the engine.

Might happen 4-5 times a month.

My MC makes all kinds of noise after turning off - especially in winter. For me at least, it's just all the exhaust parts cooling off.

Kinda sounds like my car is shrinking - kinda weird if you are still sitting inside because you can feel it a little.

this happens to me as well,

in addition to the one-muffled-pop-at-a-time every 5 seconds or so, after about a minute or so, it will make the same type of sound, except about 8-10 pops in about a second or 2... then go back to slow popping.

i assume it was just something cooling down. no other problems...

Sorry to revive an old thread, but it's Interesting that this sound was never resolved. I was sitting in the car this morning after commuting to work, on the phone and noticed the popping. It did it for a minute or two before I stopped paying attention to it, but it was a consistent ~10 second pause between pops. I've noticed it several times before, but keep forgetting to ask about it. Mine is a 2008 MCS.

I also hear an electric motor running very briefly immediately after closing the door that sounds like it's coming from the driver's side rear quarter panel area. Anyone know what that sound is?

Hmm, I always hear it while the car is in my garage, and I don't lock the car in my garage, but that's an interesting idea and I'll try to see if there is any relationship to it.

Not sure if the fuel pump is on that side near the back.. my understanding is that there are two on the R56. The only "popping" I hear is from the exhaust and other bits moving around under the car as it cools off.

There's another thread about this somewhere, it's just the fuel tank depressurizing. Mine has always done it, more when the gas tank is half empty or less. Perfectly normal.

i have noticed this same issue. popping every few seconds then it will pop multiple times really quick and then goes back to single pop ever couple seconds. Benibiker you say its the fuel tank depressurizing? thank you for saying that i have been wondering for a long time what that noise was.

This has been happening to my 2010 MCS since the very beginning. Was kind of annoying at first, but now I just ignore it after discovering it was normal.
