Sorry to see and hear that. Looks like it was a very large rock. I've had pain chips from minor pebbles and sand. I try not to follow big trucks, but some times you can't avoid it. Even if you were going 40mph, you still probably would not have been able to avoid it. Sorry again. The 5 is a miserable freeway.

Ouch. Check your state's insurance laws. I know that in FL insurance companies have to cover windshields with zero deductible. And that's even if you don't have any kind of collision or comprehensive insurance. Even a basic liability policy will cover your own windshield with no deductible.

Not sure if there is a similar law in your state but it'd be worth looking into.

I live in Southern California, and the roads here are so bad that the freeway is covered in rocks. I have eight bad chips in my windshield right now and a ton of smaller ones. I refuse to change to a new windshield until they clean up the roads, because I keep getting new ones. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!ARGH!!!!!!!

I have a rear window scratch. It is about 2 inches long. It does seem as deep as yours. But it does make me wonder how that happened. The dealership said it would cost about $1500 to replace it (without warranty). Great.

I still have that scratch.

I am in SD as well. A few small glass chips, although no cracking and a speckling of paint chips up front =/

Ouch - sorry to see the damage, but look on the bright side - if it had hit your paintwork instead of your windshield, it would be even more expensive and time-consuming to have repaired.

Have you already had it replaced? If not, shop around for prices. I just had the windshield replaced on mine rather than mess with repairing a half-dozen small chips, and even with the rain-sensing windshield, it was only $235 (the shop used PGW glass, and I've got no complaints with it so far.)

Sorry about your mishap. Call All Star Glass. I use them quite regularly in my business and I've found that they have great prices and they come to you.

Does anyone happen to know how much an OEM windshield is at the dealer? Just curious... Aftermarket is probably about 1/3 less the price of OEM?
