Please HELP, Trip planned and now this...

We planned a trip in our 2002 MCS and I went to change the oil and when I took the filter out there was a small black piece with a spring connected to it laying inside the housing. It is about 1 to 1 1/2 inches long and is black plastic and it has a spring inside of it. I would think it is some kind of pressure valve. It looks like a type of button. It appears to go in the bottom of the housing. There are 2 holes down in there and 1 of them is empty. This piece has 3 **** on the bottom of it and I broke them trying to put this piece back in the hole. I called a dealership and he told me I would need a whole new housing ($350.00) Just wondering... Do I? Also I went ahead and left this part out and put in a new filter and put it all back together and my oil light comes on at an idle but goes off when I give it just a little gas. What do I need or what can I do. And will it hurt to drive it? Thanks so much!!!

Don't drive without that thing. You may be able to find a used one at a junkyard or on ebay if you contact one of the folks selling wrecks.

That light (low oil pressure) is the worst light you can get.
