R50/53 Mini Connected and 2002 iPod wire

Mini Connected and 2002 iPod wire
To my surprise, the Mini Connected iPod app WORKS on my 2002 MCS with an iPod wire... But only for a few seconds and then cuts out.
Does anyone know how to get it to work more fully?
