My Mini is totaled. RIP

This past Saturday, a Jeep Cherokee decided to run a red light and broadside our 2007 Sparling Silver Cooper S as my wife was nosing into the intersection.

The Mini took a helluva beating, and was spun like a top in the intersection, but my wife still got out of it without any assistance. The Jeeps estimated speed was ~50 mph. Troopers and EMT's at the sight were surprised at how well the Mini took the hit.

I'll be looking at Spice Oranges this weekend, but I'm sure going to miss that car. It was a really sharp looking car.

ouch! I'm glad your wife wasn't hurt. Hopefully you'll be able to replace the Mini soon enough!

Sorry, I feel your pain, I had one totaled a year and half ago -- if the insurance process goes like mine did - you'll be pleasantly surprised I received almost as much as I paid for it after I had driven it 50k miles.

I'm glad to hear that everyone was ok. Im sure you'll miss the car but at least that can be replaced. The up-side is that the MINI withstood such a hit and your wife was able to walk away.

Sorry to hear about that. Make sure she rests even if she doesn't feel hurt now, a few days later some soreness might arise.

Pics too so we can mourn together. Selling any parts off of it (maybe too soon to rob the grave)?

Your wife is ok and that is good news. The car can be replaced people can not. These cars are surprisingly safe for its size. My mini was hit by a lexus suv last November, take a look in my gallery at the damage. Good luck on your new MINI purchase.

Glad to hear all is well with your wife. Keep and eye out for neck and back issues.

I have seen quite a few wrecks in person, intersection in front of the dealer was really bad for light runners, just never a Mini.

Glad to hear she is ok, and it again shows the build quality of these solid little cars.I have heard of other MINI's taking hard hits and drivers walking away. The auto insurance group gave the MINI high marks for crash tests.

Again, great to hear your Mrs. is okay! I don't even like to think of my wife being in an accident...

And yeah, it's a shame about your MINI. But it protected your wife, and that's what counts.

Best,

Spridget

Glad to hear your MINI did it's job and kept your wife safe! These cars are stout little buggers, I have heard a handful of anecdotes now about them taking hard hits from trucks/SUVs and protecting the passengers from injury. For what it's worth I think Spice Orange is a really sharp color on a MINI. Good luck with the search.

Glad to hear the wife's OK.
It could have been worse.

Get a replacement mini and make mod it even better than the first one.

Thanks for the kind thoughts folks.
I've told my wife many times that she's very, very lucky to have just stepped away from that accident. She's still upset about "her car", but I think she's starting to understand that the Mini was the disposable component in this equation.
The insurance company treated me square, once we got all of the package and build data straight, so we'll be back in another Mini soon. Hopefully.

I have considered asking the insurance for the salvage on the vehicle.
Has anyone done this?

I think it is usually like 10% of the value they will let you buy it back. Some companies vary so check with them before it gets parted out.

Glad you all are OK.

I can certainly understand your situation. I am forced to dodge and duck SUV's all the time while I am driving my MINI. I guess they see only a little MINI and figure they would not feel a thing if they hit me. So, they pretty regularly run red lights and stop signs, even though they see them, and see me.

I'm sorry to hear about your beloved MINI! I'm happy to that your wife is okay. We all know that is the most important thing...

The exciting thing is planning your next MINI and getting it configured so that it is even BETTER than the other one! Silver lining... cup is half full... carpe diem... etc., etc.,

Not to be some sort of sick voyeur...

But I would love to see pictures and see what the Mini can stand up to (and look like afterwards).

No need to worry about being a voyeur. Hopefully this pic, from the insurance adjuster, loads. I may have more tomorrow, as I have to go to the salvage yard to retrieve some possesions.

Ouch! Glad your wife is okay. The MINI looks surprisingly good for having been hit by a Cherokee at 50 mph. A coworker recently was in a Mustang and was hit by a similar vehicle at a similar speed, albeit a little more towards the rear, and basically the front of the car was ripped off. The CHP told him that if the truck had hit 6-12 inches farther back, he would have been killed, but instead he walked away. (Sorry for the thread drift.)
