tapping noise

so, i pulled in to pay my power bill and while i was sitting there the engine started making this very audible tapping/knocking noise. it sounds like it's coming from the front of the engine (front as in passenger side). it increases with engine speed but never really gets any louder as revs increase...the pitch just increases to a metallic ping-y noise. it doesn't sound any louder when i pull the oil fill cap off.

any ideas?

its an '08 MC with less than 27k miles on it. no previous problems at all.

thanks a lot.

Turn car off let it sit about 15 minutes and check your oil. I'll bet it is low. This happens if the oil level gets to low.

If you've never had the timing chain tensioner replaced, consider doing that - even if you have to pay for it, neither the part nor the labor is expensive and it could save you a lot of grief and $$$$ later on.

Also, how often do you change the oil? If you only do it when the computer says too, consider adding a once a year change to your maint schedule, it could save you a turbo or even an engine down the road. There have been turbo failures due to sludging of the oil in the drain line from the turbo, fresh oil twice a year might be all that's needed to prevent that down the road.

Do NOT take it to Jiffy Lube or the like, either do it yourself if you're competent or have the dealer do it.

MINIDAVE-he has a 08 MC, so I don't think he has a "turbo" to worry about

Not much help here... but my '08 MC does this too. It's very random - comes and goes with no pattern that I can detect. I suspected the vacuum pump was causing the noise, but I'm not sure. I've mentioned it to my MINI dealer a few times when it's been in for service - they can find nothing amiss. Going in again next week - I'll report if they find anything, but don't hold your breath!

My MC has been trouble-free so far @ around 60K KM - 36000 miles.
