What are the benefits of direct injection?

I'm engine dumb, so please excuse the ignorance! But, we've all heard that carbon build up is a problem with direct injection engines...so what are the benefits in having a direct injection engine?

Thanks for the link. Here are the highlights:

- Increased fuel efficiency
- High power output
- Better control of emissions

All good, but IMO, the carbon issue far outweighs the benefits...
