What type of transmission fluid do I use???

I want to change my transmission fluid and have been searching and searching and cant figure out what I need. I have a 2006 Mini Cooper (NON S) with a manual 5 speed. Does anyone know what I should use???

Also If anyone has done this before, do you know if the drain plug is magnetic?

If you have a 5 SPD Gearbox #GS5-52BG in MC's built from 07/04 - it should take appx 3.7 liters of MTF-LT-3. It comes in a white - either 4 or 5 liter jug.

Thanks! I already changed it and its running smooth! It also has a label right on the transmission itself telling you what kind of fluid to use.

I changed the oil in my 6 speed Getrag at about 36,000 miles and will continue to do so periodically. The manufacturers are absolutely nuts when they say it doesn't need to be changed. Lubricating a gearbox is one of the toughest things a lube has to do and even the best synthetics will break down after a while. BMW used to say the lube in the final drive (at the rear wheel) of their motorcycles was a lifetime lube. They even eliminated a way to easily drain and refill it. After a spike in premature drive failures, they changed their tune.

does someone have the part number for a automatic gearbox of a 2005 mini cooper S ??
also do you know the name of the manufacturer (other company's makes the oil & is cheaper to get the brand name oil than the car's name oil)

thanks a lot!

Just wanted to add to this thread a little info. My wife teaches High School and one of her students drove a 2005 MC Auto tranny. She hit a deer one day and had to have it fixed. She took it to a local body shop and they fixed the damage but in the process they had to drain the transmission and refill. They put the wrong fluid in and within 2 days the tranny failed. The insurance company just totaled her car due to the tranny failure. Amazing!!! Her parents bought her another Mini!! Moral of the story is.....make sure you use the exact fluid specified!
