Is this the right Royal Purple Motor Oil?

[url]http://www.amazon.com/Royal-Purple-Street-Synthetic-Motor/dp/B000BNYMX2/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1302458755&sr= 1-1[/url (Royal Purple Street Synthetic Motor Oil - SAE5W30, Quart Bottle, pack of 12)

http://www.amazon.com/Mobil-96989-Synthetic-0W-40-Motor/dp/B000SKV4U2/ref=sr_1_3?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1302458835&sr= 1-3 (Mobil 1 96989 synthetic 0W-40 Motor Oil)

is the above Mobil 1 the correct one to buy too? Royal Purple costs less.

What would you recommend? I just want to get more MPG

Yes, both of those are the correct motor oils for an R56 MCS.

Please note the RP is not an LL-01 rated oil (I don't think it is A3/B3 either). When I contacted RP, they advised me to use a 12k OCI.

I've been pleased with the RP. Have not tried the Mobil1, but there are plenty of folks here on NAM who are happy with it.

I'm not sure either oil is going to have much, if any, impact on MPG (at least measurable). I think driving style followed by tires are going to be the two variables that produce any noticeable change in MPG.

unfortunately, amazon is not a place you want to shop for mobil 1. try walmart or even your local bmw/mini dealership for the most competitive price - around $6/qt around my area.

I would stay very far away from Royal Purple...

Working at a dealer I saw many a car come in with oil issues running Royal Purple.

Mainly lots of sludging issues. This was either from running it to long or its just not up to the task. We had a wide range of customers use it including SRT-4 owners and Cummins diesel owners.

Royal Purple is a fantastic oil - it's what I use in my 09 MCs and I plan to keep using it.

Your Amazon leak is the right kind of Royal Purple oil - 5w-30. You need to get the Mini OEM oil filter.

To get better mpg, the important factors, imo, are: style of driving, tires and tire pressure (like jcauseyfd said), and using the correct octane gas.
Although I feel that Royal Purple is better than the Mobil-1, I doubt it will get you better mpg.

pheatton, thanks for the info. Based your your concerns I did a quick google seach using the key work "royal purple oil problems" and to my surprise, I got many hits. This is one typical from grassrootmotorsports forum:

http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/for...s/26002/page1/

I have never used RP and now I do not intend to. My favorite engine oils are still Redline 5W30, Castrol 0W30 and Mobil 0W40.

I know a very good VW tech and this is what he says about oil, If the car came with Castrol in it put Castrol back in it. People who are smarter and make a lot more then I do are the ones designing these engines. I would think they know best.

This VW tech is currently ranked #1 in the US and #4 in the world by VW.

I wouldn't run anything that isn't recommended by MINI. Mobil 1 0w-40 is, but RP isn't.
If you want to get the best mileage try shifting at low rpm's (around 2,000) with the "sport button" off and try to stay under 65mph. My mileage really drops down when I'm on the freeway doing 80-85mph.
Also only run ethynol free premium.
