Expected mileage from Dunlop Starspecs?

I have a set waiting to be put on and am curious how many miles I can expect to get out of them. I get over 30k from the stock runflats.

I've had almost 20k from both of the sets that have run.

The current set is still legal at 153k on the odometer, and went on the rims at 134k.

This set ran 12 autocross events last year, including a round trip to Lincoln Nebraska from the Boston area for the National Finals.

Driving style and chassis setup matter quite a bit of course - YMMV.

Good tires I reckon - hope you like 'em.

Cheers,

Charlie

Great! I was hoping to get a lot more than most people on tirerack commented. I don't have too many twisty roads around here to wear them out quickly.

I only got 15K out of my set. Love the grip but really hated the tread block noise at 5K miles. Rotated every 3K and only very spirited backroads driving.

Excellent in rain and easy to get tires up to temp even below 45F. Impact noise on bumps was high. I switched to Bridgestone RE-11's. Improvement in all areas, excellent grip dry and wet. No noticeable impact noise. RE11's are more expensive and likely better for daily driver tires.

If only buying track or autocross tires, I would highly recommend Dunlop Star Specs Z1's.

MM, unfortunately I only get about 8k to 12k miles on my three sets that I have used so far.

Have you compared the tread wear rating on the Dunlops with that on your current tire? With so many variables, not even a fortune teller could predict (accurately) the mileage you will get from any given tire. The tread wear rating may give you some idea of what to expect. See http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirete...jsp?techid=48&

I am mightily amused at the very wide range reported in this thread. Methinks some folks drive harder than I do on the street.

If you are looking for top performance, the RE-11s are all that for many folks.

You're seeking grip right? Otherwise you'd not be looking at the stickiest street tires available...

The top of the heap for SCCA ST tires includes the Hankook RS3, the Bridgestone RE-11, the Dunlop Star Specs, and the Toyo R1R. Some folks toss the Kumho into that list also (haven't tried 'em).

None of those tires are built for mileage of course.

Of those listed, the R1R is best in the wet in my experience.

Not a dud in the bunch, and although the Star Spec tires don't impress me as being particularly loud, I've never compared them back to back to anything else. Perhaps I am just used to it...

FWIW this year's tires will also be the Dunlops. They helped me win my class last year, and so what's not to like?

Cheers,

Charlie

If I get 20k I'll be happy. In my day to day driving I'm not that hard on my tires. Most of the roads I drive are "straight". The only time I really get to push it is on the entry/exit ramps. . I don't go around smoking the tires either. I might do an occasional autocross but I haven't been racing regularly lately. If I did start back regularly I'd get a set of R-Comps.

I appreciate sticky tires even if I seldom use their full potential.

I think it depends complete on the size of the tire when you are talking mileage, or atleast it plays a very large role.

The 195/55-15 Star Spec i ran, i only got 13k out of it before hitting the wear bars, and that was with no auto-x or track days, and A LOT of hwy. They did get very noisey towards the end of their life, and that is to be expected from any tire. All in all, i thought they were an awesome tire, and they were certainly worth the money i paid. 15" tires are CHEAP..

On my GTI, they were howlers when they were new, and got a bit worse as they wore. I put about 10k street miles on them, including 3 or 4 track days. I had another set of tires I could swap on at any time though . . . I wouldn't get them unless I was planning on track or auto-x use. Too noisy. I have the Conti ExtremeContact DW's on my Mini, and they are great. I Can't really compare the ultimate grip to the Star Specs, but on the street the grip and response seems good, and they are pretty quiet and comfortable as well.
