hey guys, im going to be doing my pulley install this weekend on both my crank and my s/c and i was wondering whats the best way to do it with out the tool?

i do have a normal 3 arm pulley puller but not tool for the mini.

i was thinking about heating up the pulley a little bit with a map torch as from what i see its press fitted and then trying to see it will come off with the puller... is this a bad idea with heating it, are there any seals i have to worry about if i heat it up?

btw i dont care if the s/c pulley gets bent or whatever but im hoping not to have to grind it off.

any input would be great as i dont have the tool and this needs to get done some how this weekend lol.

Grind it off...many folks have done it...
IMO stay away from heat....seals and bearing in the snout, and oil....
Or just get a puller for the MINI..the standard puller WILL NOT WORK...IT will deform the pulley...
Buy a puller used or new..or borrow one locally from a club....it is 100% worth it...

PS...even using the MINI specific puller will bend the OEM pulley, rendering it worthless...so this is a one way mod....no chance of ever heating it up, and hammering it on!!

 

PS..just go to greasy's in Worcester MA, about an hour away..he can pop that baby on in a few minutes, along with a new correctly sized belt!

 

For the crank pulley I followed the DIY instruction "how to do...with proper tools" and it worked fine. I ordered the threaded rod online since it was easier for me. Car in gear, buddy on the pedal to torque when done.

Having just spent a bunch of time getting my new shocks on, looking back I should have had it done and let someone deal with the rusted bolts. Going to greasey will be easiest on everything (except the wallet). But seems like while working on certain things, I think, "I should have farmed this one out..."

I did it (just the s/c pulley) myself with the craven puller. It was pretty tough to get that sucker off there even with the tool. i've heard that cutting it off works fine. theres been multiple acounts of people snapping the three-arm pullers on the s/c pulley. I'd say either try and borrow/buy/rent a tool, or cut it off. i can't think of anything else that would really work...

would the crank be hard to remove with the 3 arm puller? i have removed a crank on another car with it before but im not sure how it is on the mini

The crank pulley will come off with a steering wheel puller, or a generic harmonic balancer puller.

But with the supercharger, wait and get the proper pulley puller, that way you won't risk doing any damage.

 

yeah i wish i could wait and get the right tool but i cant as this weekend is the only time before the tune that i have a chance to install it. not to mention i dont have the extra money for the core on rental of the tool... isnt it expensive? :(

so i cant get it in time and wont have the money anyways
thats why im trying to find out other ways to take this thing off.

that resulted in a undrivable car until I had to grind it off, very risky.

be patient, get proper tools, do it right, do it once.

RESCHEDULE THE TUNE.

amen. just rent the tool. as i said, that sucker is a tough one to get off. you could also just get the tune, and have it re-tuned after, which is free.

 

I was having a tuff time getting my SC pully off using the recommended puller so it heated the pully a bit with a propane torch and it came right off.

 

i cant reschedule the tuning because jan from rmw is coming to my area for a group tune... :(

does anyone in the RI/MA/CT area have one i could borrow ?
