Yokohama S.Drive vs. Avid ENVigor

Well, I just ordered the S.Drives for my MCCS and I still think I should have bought the ENVigors! I just began reading about the ENVigors today and was all set to order them until I walked into the tire store and saw the S.drives in person. Wow, they look really cool and that's what sold me!

Chose S.drives for two main reasons, looks and traction. In Southern Nevada, California and Arizona where I'm most likely to travel, there's really no snow, except maybe once or twice a year. I was afraid that I'd be giving up too much performance with the ENVigors just to accommodate those conditions.

What I'm sorry I'll be missing out on is treadwear. The S.drives are rated at 300, while the ENVigors are in the 500's.

So I guess I'd love to hear from anyone about these two tires and how I either (a) should have got the ENVigors because they're really just as good as the S.drives or (b) how based on where I live I should be running the S.drives year-round!

(btw, the "dood" at discount tires told me he ran S.drives year-round in MI, but I hardly believe that. He also said he doesn't sell many ENVigors, which made sense in So. Nevada and put me back onto the S.drives. And boy, will those S.drives look sweet on my MCCS!)

thanks!

Isn't the ENVigor an all season? I have heard good things about them as well, but I ordered S.Drives anyway. They will be mounted on Thursday, I'll let you know my initial impressions. I have a set of winters so I went with a dedicated summer tire. I was looking at Fuzion ZRi and General UHP but went with the S.Drive for a little stiffer sidewall.

yes, the ENVigor is an all season, and that's part of the debate for me e.g., all-season w/ tread life and less grip/sporty handling or summer tires with all the "fun". Admittedly, even though I've already ordered them I'm still wondering if I shouldn't go with a different summer tire (I gotta stop google-diving this topic!!!)

I have a bad habit of compulsively reading reviews for stuff I've already bought, and then second guessing my decision. I drive myself crazy.

Just enjoy your new summer tires! I'm sure you will appreciate the summer rubber in the hot, dry Nevada climate over the coming months. There is always another tire that is reviewed better or this guy says is better for that reason, but I'm sure you and your MINI will enjoy the new shoes. I can't wait to get rid of my winters and put mine on!

Here is an extract of my end of life comments on the S.drives I had (from the THMMC forum):

I squeezed 25k miles out of them. They wore through the first few 32nds quite quickly, but slowed over time. Road noise started to set in pretty good starting just before 20k. By end of life, it was so bad, my family was like "what is that noise? Is something wrong with your MINI?" when they would ride with me. Noise notwithstanding though, the grip was excellent, both wet and dry and I never really detected any increased propensity to hydroplane on wet roads even as the depth dropped below 4/32nds. And they had picked up a bit of a vibration in the last 2k miles (probably due to me not getting them rebalanced on a regular basis).
I did drive these throughout the year, including a NC winter which included a couple days with some snow. Like any summer tire, just have to be really careful.

imo, very grippy. They tended to be noisy in the corners when pressed. Some folks like that, some don't.

Based on other folks who have had them, it seems to be pretty consistent that the wailing road noise from them sets in at about 18k.

Thanks for the review, that aligns with what I have read elsewhere: great tire that gets really noisy. For me that is not a consideration, I'll just turn up the stereo

The treadwear sounds decent, considering I have a winter set, they will last me awhile.
