I purchased a tensioner putting my engine back together and this is the one I bought. Does anyone know if they have had this tensioner put in their car and if so what were the circumstances. I have not seen this number mentioned by anyone. Thanks.

Usually not used when replacing the entire chain and tensioner parts for the R56 "death rattle".

 

Thanks for the answer. The problem I have is that no one seems to be able to tell you what to use. I think I going with the above tensioner, my old sprockets and chain and new guide rails. Hope it works.

 

The new 551 tensioner is longer and will make-up the slack by a stretched chain, but a chain not over the limit -- 68mm when using the BMW special tool.

You have to remove the tensioner and inspect the limits of the chain, based on your findings you either replace the tensioner with #551 and if it's over the limit, you replace the whole thing with tensioner #895.

 

Quick question, how do you plan on locking the crank and cams in place?
