What does the Brake light and vehicle check icon mean

I have a '08 Mini Cooper basic model. Had front pads and rotors done when my display said 370 miles till service. I had gone to the dealership and had them read the key that said I needed rear brake pads possible front and back rotors. I took it a local very reputable - or so I thought - auto service and used dealership specialized in BMWs Mercedes, etc. It turned out I needed a water-pump which I later found out was still under warranty 43,000 miles and they never questioned it. I didn't have the back brakes done at that time. About a week later the Brake light showed up with the vehicle check icon. I assumed this was because I didn't do the backs. I went back to my trusty mechanic who had been taking care of my cars prior to the mini for over 10 years. They did the back pads and rotors but can't get this light to go off. Is this associated with my brakes or something else. See photo.

Thank you!

Well, you posted your question in the first-generation MINI section, but I'll ask the mods to move it.

If the brake wear sensor on the second-gen MINIs works the same way as on the earlier cars, the sensor itself is a sacrificial part. Once the brakes wear down enough to wear through the sensor, the dash light is illuminated. To clear the dash light, you have to replace the sensor that wore through. I'll leave it to the second-gen owners for the details, since they'll know more, but I think there's only a sensor on one side in the front and one side in the back, so you should just have to replace one.

Hi Scott - I'm new to this site and know nothing about cars. Thank you for letting me know I posted my question in the wrong place. How do I find Gen II area and what's the difference between the two? I appreciate your taking the time to respond and somehow moving my question to the right place.

That Indicates that one of the brake pad wear sensors has been tripped. Based on the mileage on you car I am going to assume it is your front pads. To verify this, Key in foot off the clutch/brake pedal. Press start/stop button. Wait for service indication to clear. Then use the button at the end of the turn signal stalk to find the service indicating menu. It will then tell you if the front or rear pads tripped. The symbol looks like (!) near the front or rear of the car. Depending on which one tripped it should have negative mileage.

Did I confuse you enough?
