Navigation & Audio iPhone 4 armrest adaptor....
iPhone 4 armrest adaptor....
Anyone have one of these AND it work? I got one this morning at the dealer, installed it and it charges the phone fine, but NO SOUND. The one I had for my iphone 3 worked fine, this one, no joy!
Turns out the one that is currently available ONLY charges the phone. I took it back to the dealership and they told me they thought I knew that when I asked for it. Supposedly BMW is coming up with another one that will charge the phone AND allow you to play music through the stereo. Oh well.....
Murph,
which car are you trying to get the adapter for?
There are three different adapters. All of them ARE currently available. It just depends on which system you are trying to use it with as to which one you need.
another question is Is the car you are trying to use it with equiped with the "Smart Phone Prep" package. If not then you will never get audio from the armrest.
Here is all the part numbers for iPhone 3gs or 4
1. 84-21-2-151-038 - Only for charging no smart phone integration
2. 84-21-2-151-043 - For Smartphone Integration.
3. 84-21-2-186-288 - MINI Connected systems only (2011 model year +)

If they are the same part number, how can they be for both the 3GS and 4? I got my CM yesterday and am all sorts of annoyed with the audio and Connected. The Y cable is ridiculous in that it is too short to do anything with the phone other than put it in the rail. The cable keeps disconnecting from the phone, too.
Using a standard iPod cable sort of works. But you can't simply navigate through the iPod. There is only a search function which turns up no results. No artists or anything load, and you can't access the iPod through the phone either.
Bluetooth audio would be okay, but that doesn't show track info and you must control everything from the phone.
The most elegant solution would be the snap in adapter. I am so frustrated with this thing already.

I do have the Smart Phone Prep package, and it worked with the iPhone 3, but when I upgraded my phone to the iPhone 4, it wouldn't fit in the snap-in adapter that came with the package. Also, it's interesting to note that the receipt I got when I returned the most recent adapter lists the part number as 84-21-2-199-389.
1. 84-10-9-182-792 - Only for charging no smart phone integration
2. 84-21-9-164-213 - For Smartphone Integration.

Maybe I'll call the parts guy and ask him about the 84-21-9-164-213 part number although I don't see how any of these part numbers could be for the iphone 3 AND iphone 4 because they are not shaped the same.
My mistake on two of the part numbers. I admit I copied the wrong two over. The 84-21-9-164-213 should read 84-21-2-151-043 and the 84-10-9-182-792 should read 84-21-2-151-038 and I have now corrected the other post.
Here are the dimensions as given by Apple for the iPhones.
iPhone 4 - 115.2 x 58.6 x 9.3mm
iPhone 3g & 3gs - 115.5 x 62.1 x 12.3mm
iPhone - 115 x 61 x 11.6mm
With the 4 being slightly narrower and thinner it should fit in the adapter just fine. Should not be loose really as it is the same length as the 3g or 3gs.
And there are people in Europe using these with both the 3gs and 4 phones.
Also the 84-21-9-164-213 is for the "Original iPhone" NOT the 3g, 3gs or 4 so with the iPhone 3g, 3gs and 4 all being larger length wise the original they would not fit in the 84-21-9-164-213

So schatzy62, I'm about to take delivery on my '11 MCS and have ordered MINI Connected with NAV, so I should order the 3rd part you listed to use with my iphone 4?
I'm still on the fence about using my iphone4 as my music storage for my car. At least 95% of my drives are short trips around town, and 2-3 longer road trips per year. In my '06 I just had a dedicated Ipod that stayed in the glove compartment full time set on shuffle. I'm curious to see how this will pan out with the '11. I may just buy an itouch to use in the car and not bother with having to plug/unplug my iphone constantly.

What is the adapter 84-21-2-199-389? It is what my dealer just sold me as the snap in adapter for the iphone 4 for an '11 connected. They said that it takes about 15 minutes before it works. I'm skeptical that it is the correct one, but we will see.

3. 84-21-2-186-288 - MINI Connected systems only (2011 model year +)
4. 84-21-2-199-389 - For iphone 4, [charge only in '11] (Reported elsewhere as for iPhone 3GS)
Edit: Poking around a little more, it looks like this part is for the iPhone 3GS, not the iPhone 4 [The sticker on the bottom DOES indicated it is for iphone 4, which docks easily]. When my gf gets home I will be able to try it with the iphone 4.
Hopefully it will work and that it will support connected.
A dealer I called said that an adapter for an iPhone4/'11/connected isn't available yet.
It seems that MINI could be well served by educating the dealers and perhaps making it clear to them as well as making them readily available. (My dealer didn't stock it.)
It would also be nice if they could figure out how to make one snap in adapter that works with all systems.
Does anyone know the list price for these adapters? My dealer charged $155 for the 84-21-2-199-389.
Is there a better source than the dealers?

Spoke with my dealer. They now say that 84-21-2-199-389 is only for pre '11 cars. He cannot supply 84-21-2-186-288 at this time. Does anyone know a source available to the US for 84-21-2-186-288?
Thanks, Pete
Thanks, Pete
My dealer called last week and said they have the adapter in stock now. I went and picked it up today. It is part no. 84 21 2 199 393 that cost $197.
Installed it and it does work with connected. Interestingly, it did not work with my ipod touch but it does work with the iphone4.
There are 2 features (so far) that don't work, video (video option is missing from the media menu) and ipod out/PlugIn (The system indicates that there are no PlugIn compatible devices connected).
I think that this adapter is an audio only adapter. It is labeled "Music" on the release button. Picture attached.
I wonder if 84-21-2-186-288 works with "PlugIn".

I think that if it exists and it supports video, the 288 would be the way to go. I have not been able to find a 288 anywhere. My dealer has seen it in the system, but has not been able to source it yet. I don't think that there would be a reason to use the 393 over the 288, other than availability.
I have never gotten the video to work. I have an iPhone 4 and also a new Nano. I am currently using the set up from the dealer, not the armrest snap in. Any clues on the video? I only have a few TV shows in my iTunes that I have purchased. Not that I really want to watch stuff on a regular basis, but would love to have it work. Since I have a manual, it's not like I can put the car in park, so I have tried it while parked, in neutral with the parking brake on. Suggestions?

You cannot access videos thru the "Plugin" section of MINI Connected.

I have a 2009 MC Coupe and its has the armrest with phone electronics.
I am clueless as to how it works, and if I can use it with my Android phone.
I would rather remove the stuff from the armrest if I cannot use it for my phone, because I'd rather have the space.
OTOH, I would be interested in using a suitable adapter, if that is possible.

Don't forget the parking brake. If it isn't set, you won't get any video.
