For those of us who only became car nuts once we became part of the MINI cult, could y'all please explain what STS (Street Touring) means and what exactly it consists of? Do I need a helmet to participate? (Ugh, I hate helmet hair!) Tee hee! Thanks.

Another silly question from one who became a car enthusiast only after getting a MINI - what's so special about a Hemi engine? Why does this new Dodge monster truck keep pushing it? How is it different from a regular engine?

Clo- STS is a class for SCCA Solo 2, also known as autocross. Your MCS would be in STX, a tougher class. STS is for Coopers. There are different levels of mods from stock to STS/STX to street prepared to prepared to modified. If yo plan on autocrossing, they will have everything you need at the event. You will need a helmet, but not much else. I'll email you when the next event is here.

The 426 Hemi is a legendary motor from the muscle car era. The hemi refers to the combustion chamber that has a hemispherical shape. Legendary, as some of the mystic of the Hemi is over-rated. The first muscle car to run 12s from the showroom floor is a Buick 6 cylinder.

Clo,
You can read about the SCCA rules for different classes-
Street Touring rules
Street Prepared rules

When you go they will check your MINI and see that it is safe and runs in the correct class.
You will have four runs will last roughly a minute and you will be doing low to moderate speed manuevers around and between cones on the course. If you hit a cone out of it's marked location you will be penalized time and if you miss a gate then you will be disqualified for that run. Your best legal time of the four runs will be compared to others that drive that day overall and within your class. It's very fun.

Think of it as a mini tail of the dragon and the cones are dragon poop-so don't hit them!

Incidentally, the combustion chamber was/is hemispherical as opposed to pentagonal (I think?) which is what most engines are.

I also find it odd how much Dodge talks about Hemis. Most people born after 1965 (hell most born BEFORE that date) have little or no idea what they are...so they're marketing these autos to approximately 1% of the population the way I've got it figured.
