Countryman S with DDM Works Ram Air intake

Just picked my Countryman today, and installed my DDM Works Ram Air intake that I saved from my 2009 Cooper S (R.I.P ) I really feel the difference, the sound is great, and I'm really enjoying it. I will try to get pics up for you guys tomorrow.

Give us a good write up-difficulty of install, extent of difference, etc.

Well the install is pretty easy, it is not my first time installing though. It took about 15 minutes to install. After the install, the car feels more responsive, definitely feel the difference. The sound, if you like the sound of the turbo blow off, is nice to hear. I'm really getting a feel for the car still, I will definitely get more info out once I'm finished breaking the car in.

OK, so you're telling us that you installed an air cleaner with an opening on the lid, which is now open to the engine compartment, and now sucking in heated air?
Since there isn't a hood scoop per say, you couldn't use the tunnel mounting to the hood?

If you'll look at the link a little closer you'll see that it actually makes the hood scoop functional. There is a piece iinstalled on the bonnet to direct the air (fresh) into that little hole.

For your information there's no hood scoop on a Countryman. That picture is of an R57 not an R60.

Thumbs up

Ok , guys I promised pictures. I'm sorry it took long, but I was buried with work, and haven't had time. Yes, I forgot to mention the Countryman's airbox is slightly different, but I had saved the full air box off my previous Cooper S, had to salvage something from the accident but it is a direct swap, just put the countryman sensor in, and everyhting else followed.

Looks good, did you run anything to get air into the box or is it just open?

No I don't have the ram air because the countryman doesn't have a scoop, although the inside of the box is layered with insulating tape to keep the temp down. I have measured on more than one occasion and the air inside is much cooler, plus more air getting in due to the filter.

Where did you measure the air temp from and what did you use to measure it? Did you measure it while driving the car down the highway? It doesn't matter one bit that the air box is insulated. You are defeating the purpose of that cai by drawing in air from the hot engine compartment. You were better off leaving the factory air box on which drew in outside air. You're actually lowering your horsepower by drawing in hot air. If you don't believe me then go put your car on a dyno with the current configuration and then dyno it with the factory box on.
You're best bet is to figure out some way to install a hose or whatever to draw in fresh air. Let us know if you get something figured out. It's a shame that they don't have any vent system on the cowl. I love the DDM system on the R56 and Clubman. Maybe DDM will design a retro fit kit for the CM's cowl. I'd definitely buy one then. Until then I'll sit tight.

not to jump down your neck...

but your telling me that any of the alta/k&N, etc open box intakes reduce horsepower despite dyno results that would suggest other wise on a R55/56? My clubbie had a nonfunctioning hood scoop (unless you dremel out the holes). These open air filters sucked in hot air from the under hood just as you describe. Much like the DDM/alta/NAM/helix etc would do on a countryman.

Yea, exactly but I am not going to get in a p#@sing contest. My 2009 Cooper S had to have the hood scoop modded so that I could get it fully functional, if you look at alot of the "cai" they are in the engine bay with open filters and they get gains. My 2002 MCS had to have the intake modded to get colder air by removing the panel between air intake and the openings under the windshield. So there you go my .02 cents

Oh and by the way, if you would like to do temperature measurements when your driving it's easy, just use a small data logger for temp. and relative humidity it works really well

I have an OBD2 scanner I can hook up and watch while we're driving.

Exactly, I have an '03 S and did the same thing, by purchasing a MyMINI cai which includes a modified firewall piece to remove the factory one with the small hole.
I refuse to buy a supposed cai system that removes the air box only to install a K&N style filter that sucks hot air, Alta for one. Racing engineers have proved the benefit of a TRUE cai.

Too many people are clueless when it comes to their vehicles and performance.

I have been a Mini owner since 2002, and know plenty about the car and it's performance. I had a 2002, heavily modified, I had a 2009 with it's fair share of mods. There is no ignorance there, and I have had to test plenty of things on these cars to see if there are results to be had. The intake that you claim is only taking in hot air, is actually taking in cold air and generating an increase in power. I don't just modify and pray it works, I test and make sure it works. All tuners do this or else we wouldn't have anything to place on our cars. I also don't plan on stopping the mods, that is why I mod, because I know what I'm doing and I enjoy the result.
