Fuel Tank

I am wanting to replace the stock fuel tank with something bigger, and mounted in the center of the trunk where the spare tire would go. Something around 12 gallons.
Anyone know of an aftermarket tank made for this?

I could also have an aluminum tank made. If I did this, should I have one outlet in the back, bottom, center? Or for hard cornering, maybe two outlets, one in each back corner?

Check out the online race shops and search for "fuel cells". They come in a ton of different sizes. You might want to check out the vintage mini race forums since all Mini race cars are required to run fuel cells. You can get an idea of size and mounting options that way. I wouldn't have a custom tank made unless you want to to fit in the bottom of the boot without modifying the pan. I have never seen an aftermarket fuel tank for a Mini that fits in that location to answer your question.

As for outlet, it really doesn't matter. If you're wanting multiple outlets (for hard cornering, as you stated) you might want to think it through a little more. Fuel is thicker than air, so the outlet with the least resistance will always be used. Having an outlet on each corner will guarantee that you will suck air out of one if the tank is low enough, not guarantee you'll always get fuel. Sorry, maybe my explanation may be hard to follow.

Good luck,
Jeff

Thanks for the reply Jeff. I also thought about sucking air with two outlets. I have looked at the tanks Jeds have and they have one that's pretty close to what I want. Even a model with a fuel level sensor.

Some Cooper S models had an additional tank on the right fender, same as what's on the left. I think you can still buy them from one of the vendors. Unless you have a race car, I'd try to keep it original. You'll also still have some usable trunk space left if you do it that way.

Here's a pic of one...

I had know about the extra tank but didn't want to go that way, with two tanks and two fillers. I ended up ordering the one from Jegs. It's close enough size wise to work and reasonably priced.

For my sake, please post pictures here once you get it installed. Should be a fun project.

Thx,
Jeff
