R56 Squeaky (Sun?) Roof

I have a 2007 (red) R56 hardtop with a sunroof. It has 20k on it. I bought it used about a month ago now, and it has a few months of the 4 year warranty remaining. I love it, but there are a couple of things perplexing me. Here's another one:
- I took it to the dealer to have the sunroof visors replaced, as they were loose or torn. I did this in two trips, since I did not notice the front problem until after I'd had the dealer replace the rear one. After the front one was replaced I took a long road trip. About 100 miles or so into the trip I noticed that the roof area around the dome light started squeaking every time I hit a bump or constantly on roads that weren't perfectly smooth or were the granular asphalt stuff used on most TX roads. This noise was not related to a a certain speed (as some vibrations seem to be in most cars). The noise is now driving me crazy! It's right in my ear. I took the car to the dealer, but he said, "oh, that's going to be a hard one to solve" or some such thing. Anyone else had this problem? Ideas I can take to the dealer when I go back next week?
Thanks.

I'm taking mine in as soon as I can for the same issue. It appears that on mine, the rear sunroof glass isn't seated properly. The back edge of the glass sits higher than the front, and seems to be causing the rub/squeak noise.

I think the dealer is just gonna have to remove the glass on both and adjust it. It's under warranty, and it's their job to fix it, regardless if it's "hard to solve" or not. That is a ridiculous response he gave you.

Good luck!

Thanks

Thanks. That gives me a good idea to suggest! Any other thoughts that are out there are also appreciated.

I had a rattle that seemed to come from the dome light. It turned out to be some washers on the rear sunroof. It happened after I had my dealer fix a problem with the sunshades opening on their own. They hadn't tightened the screws properly when they installed rubber bumpers to keep the shades from sliding open. It sounded exactly like it was coming from the dome light. Fortunately my dealer has a raised curb area in front where they back the cars up onto. When I drove it off this curb it would cause the rattle. Was quite a sight to see one tech driving forward and back over this slopped curb while a second had her head in the rear sunroof trying to pinpoint the source of the noise.

I don't know if the "loose washer" story was true or not but they did end up fixing it. I guess you could ask your dealer to check for any loose washer/screws around the sunroof glass.

I just got my car back yesterday from the same squeak / rattle. I hear it on concrete all the time and potholes/bumps in asphalt.

I had them take both of the shades out and I believe the problem is solved. I'll know more tomorrow when I can drive the car since we got a foot of snow today.

I did play with the shades and could hear the squeak....it's b/c they are plastic and on plastic slides.

No shades?

So, you are simply testing Sans Shades to see if that rids you of the squeak, or did they take them out and replace them?

Thanks.

Confirmed. No more squeak or sound from sunroof area. I'm going to start a new thread regarding it.

Problem Solved

Thanks all. It was loose glass or glass rubbing up against the frame (?) in the sunroof (I think the rear panel). I took it to the dealer, they fixed it, no problem! (No charge either - still under warranty.)

Appreciate your ideas and your help!

I have the same squeak coming from the rear glass in the winter time. It seems loudest around 27 F. Durning the hot summer the back glass binds and keeps the sunroof from opening. It's been to the dealer twice for the hot sticking issue. They adjust it and apply "Special MINI Lubricant" but it never lasts long. I'm doing to a different dealer on Wednesday for a cold start engine stall (hope the redesigned intake will fix) and I'm going to have them look at the sunroof too. I'll post back but I don't have high hopes without a full sunroof cassette replacement. That seems to be the only real fix according to other posts on this board.

My sunroof gave me tons of problems. Squeaking, chattering, vibrating, you name it. The dealer "fixed" the sunroof about 5 times.

So glad I don't have a sunroof anymore.

Took me seven trips to sort out my sunroof and I think the headliner is squeaking now. If I ever get another MINI, no sunroof for me!

there are still noises but they're not coming from the sunroof anymore.

now I hear a tiny one from the front passenger headrest......a little foam at the bottom and it should be gone -

6 in one - half a dozen in the other....

I had that sound in mine as well as wind noise. The dealer replaced all of the sunroof seals and weatherstripping and my wind noise is 95% better and no more squeak.

Meh, dealer called to say the "seals were real dry" so they cleaned them and lubed it and re-initilized the sunroof. I doubt it will fix anything as I've had this done three time before already. I'll have to wait until summer to see if it still jams.

This type of stuff is exactly why I waffled on a sunroof for so long when building my MCS. In the end I decided no sunroof. One less problem to worry about - historically a sunroof will eventually cause problems.

I had an '06 w/sunroof - no problems.

I have a '10 MCSa w/sunroof - no problems with the sunroof. I did have a squeak issue, though. Brought it back to the dealer (11K on the odo) and they said it was a loose striker plate. (??!!) I had a hard time locating where it was coming from. To me it sounded like it was coming from the left rear.

Bottom line; problem located and cured. In about an hour, while I waited, no less.

I had it adjusted Friday and it seems much better. I believe I was getting the wind noise because the glass was not sealed tight against the seal in the front glass. I could easily slip a business card between the glass and the seal on the front sunroof. They adjusted the glass so that it is much tighter now. I took the car down the interstate (high speed test... was not as noticeable just driving around town) before I signed off on the paperwork and it was great.

The dealer said they have done a lot of these and they know exactly where to position the glass. If it holds in this position over time then I will feel a lot better about the sunroof.

The rattle that I had in the back shade appears to be gone as well. Fingers crossed on that one too...
